No. Bl does not come cheap if you want low Le.
What about linearizing impedance? Does that improve the behaviour of a driver?
Clearly I have a lot to learn about loudspeaker construction and physics. Every time I think a I have a good grasp on things another characteristic/variable comes into play that I wasn't considering.
So is there a good way to determine if speaker A., rated at 86db, will be louder than speaker B., rated at 90db? Other than just trying it to see?

An overhung design with a shorter peak-to-peak and 18" of diaphragm might be louder than a 12" underhung design with more peak-to-peak and power handling.
I would take the underhung design, personally !
Or an 18" with a underhung motor...

Do not let the "pro" designation fool you, this subwoofer will give solid output to 10hz in a sealed enclosure(with EQ) 15hz in a low tuned passive radiator or ported system. It may not look it but it lives up to its rated Xmax. So far this is my favorite sounding subwoofer driver, even compared to the famous LMS5400. The slightly lower low frequency capabilities are made up for by the over 60hz response. It still sounds clean over 200hz! And LOUD.
