My 2004 Tacoma (in 2004), bought brand new to replace my beloved 1998 Tacoma when it was totaled. Though I enjoyed the 4x4 capabilities and a bit more power and torque, the meager 18mpg from the small 3.4L 190HP V6 engine was disappointing to say the least. Soaring gas prices and 70 mile round trip commute motivated me to opt for a 2005 Matrix (36mpg) the following year.
