    Help adding Wi-Fi to truck

I am looking to use an iPad for the main source in my work truck. I like the CarPlay and navigation. Also has all my contacts and I can use quickbooks. Here is the issue, I can’t make or receive calls on the iPad unless it’s on a network. I get a lot of calls for work so it will be much easier if I can use one device for everything. Looking for something that I can just get in and go. Don’t want to have to power up and connect every time I get in.

I use the built in wifi in my Silverado, it’s $25/mo for unlimited data thru AT&T. My second option was to get an iPad directly from a carrier that has 5g data built in, but I don’t know if it would automatically connect

My truck doesn’t have the built in Wi-Fi option. My iPad has data and a SIM card but still can’t make or receive a phone call without being tied to my iPhone via both being on the same Wi-Fi network.

I see your dilemma now. I didn't know it had to be on the same wifi...I'll have to do some research on the subject

I wonder if something like this would work to supply the connection? https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR...4-42cab39e191b

The phone would be the actual carrier, but this would act as a bridge.

    ...just thinking out loud

I can just use my phone as a hotspot. I just don’t want have to setup and reconnect every time I get in the truck. I’m lazy I guess

My thinking is if the wifi stayed on all the time (shouldn't pull much current), then the phone and iPad should automatically connect as soon as it gets in range. It may not work like that, but it's worth a try.

As an experiment, you could disconnect the ethernet on your home wifi router and see if the phone and iPad see each other.

Or get a mobile hot spot device instead of the ipad being on a network.

Example from verizon, but most carriers have them: https://www.verizon.com/internet-devices/

Then just leave it in your truck permanently.

I may have to do the mobile hotspot thing. I have one but I will have to experiment to see how long the battery lasts if I just leave it on. I wonder if it will time out if it doesn't see activity for a certain amount of time.

Can you not just have it "hard wired" some how and always on?
