Thread: New tweeters or spend more time tuning?

New tweeters or spend more time tuning?

I'm contemplating replacing my tweeters. Overall I'm pretty happy with my sound system, but if I had to improve two things, I would want a more balanced high and more pronounced midbass. I didn't do a full sound treatment w/ MLV so I am not really wanting to rush and replace the 6.5"s, but I do know more midbass is possible because my dad's Polks have better midbass (same car, probably less treatment than mine, not as nice amps either). However, I do constantly notice my highs every time I first start up music.

My highs initially seemed overly harsh with like hi-hats having an almost aggravating sound. However, now that I turned down those frequencies, I feel like the highs don't seem to balance as well with the rest of the system. My tweeters + woofers are from a JL Audio C2 650 component set. I know back when I was looking into the components, reviews were saying that the set had a very bright sound, but I didn't expect it to be this bright.

Any suggestions? Should I spend more effort tuning? Or is it worth gambling and getting some new tweeters?

You spent a grand on the amp and $200 on speakers. I would look at upgrading the speakers. Maybe something like the stevens comps?

Haha, don't worry, it was just upgrade progression! I started off with a cheap Pioneer amp, but my dad took my Pioneer amp and upgraded my setup So it seems like upgrading the speakers isn't that absurd of a desire.

I've been contemplating getting some Audiofrog GB10s or GB15s to replace the tweeters first. I wouldn't be opposed to comps, but I think it's too much money to spend at once. I am considering the Hertz ML280.3 as well, heard good things about them and a good bit cheaper than the AF GBs. The Stevens Audio MB6 are pretty doable pricewise if those will pair well with either of the tweeters.

If you end up seriously considering the audiofrog GB's you'd probably want to look more into the GB15's for a 2-way. The 10's don't play as low or as easily.

But I would say exhaust all your tuning options before you buy another set, especially if it's 300-500 for what you're looking at. If that audio bug is biting you though...

Good advice, the GB15 are better for a two way, especially firing up at the windshield.

The Accord has sail tweeters that point towards the opposite front seat (driver side tweeter points at passenger and vice versa). But yes, that was why I was leaning towards the GB15 as well as I read that the 2-way setup will greatly benefit from a lower crossover point.

I did just ask about Stevens Audio tweeters, and that option is growing on me since it's only $159/pr. And I may pair it with a Stevens Audio MB6 or SA6 woofer later on down the line, probably Black Friday if he has a coupon.

Anyone have experience with the SA tweets?

Post some of your REW (or whatever program you use) results. Let's take a look at the current measurements and see if we can see something wrong with it.

High hats hurt my ears, so I cut the 2000hz to 4000hz region and have been in love with that cut ever since. (I modified Andy's curve with Justin's dip in his curve from the spreadsheet)

Not sure what specifically is helpful, but here are the curves. I used Helix RTA for tuning.

Unfortunately it looks like my laptop's 2nd USB port is broken so I need to get a USB hub to do any additional tuning.

Unfortunately, That tells us nothing without being able to see the rta screen of the actual output.

we need to see the actual speaker measurement, not the eq to achieve that.

Yea that's what I figured. Convenient timing for my USB port to be broken. Most frustrating part about these newer ultra thin laptops!
