Tried a little speaker restoration today...

Recently traded for a pair of Morel Integra Ovation 5 drivers, and well... they were a bit dusty, and definitely sunfaded. So got the bright idea to freshen them up a bit, and try to bring back the original finish and shine.

    Started with this:

    Close up of each driver:

After a mild cleaning using a soft bristle brush, decided to try and bring back the cone's color. Didn't want to add too much weight to the pulp, so a thinned down mixture of water based paint seemed like the best option. Almost a 2:1 mixture of water and the water based craft paint. Flat black, dipped a Q-tip into the solution and just slowly brushed it on to each cone. Learned a bit on the first driver, definitely don't want to rush the applications. Let it soak up and dry first, or else you get little dried up paint "fuzzies".

Here is a comparison of the two drivers:

    And after completing them both:

Here is a close up of the first driver (can see some slight brushmarks from the application process):

    Second driver looks much better:

    Are you not entertained?!?!

I scored an old solid direct drive turntable and cut the spindle off... Indispensable for doing speaker repair.

33.3RPM is a bit fast for surround stuff but would work well in that app.

Didn't want to make another thread for the same concept but I did do a little clean up on the pair of Nak midbasses I snagged from James. Though since I wasn't thinking a head I didn't take any before pictures but the requiered less restoration and more clean and polish than Daniels ovations. I used a microfiber rag with a little bit of WD-40 for the polished steel baskets and the aluminum cones and a tiny bit of olive oil and a cue tip to "restore" the uyrithan surrounds. Despite being close to 20 years old they ended up looking almost as good as they sound. Badass speakers Z, thanks again.

And because I'm a Nak nerd here is a family shot with one of the SPW-104s subs that is going to be paired with them.

turntable was free, and having the weight helps when you are turning it by hand.

HOWEVER, even with a 3" pneumatic cutoff wheel, getting the spindle off takes some doing.

Then after you get it off, and let it sit on the floor for a while as you admire your work, you may want to let it sit on the floor a little longer, like a week or more. Because that bastard stays HOT. Turntable spindles defy the laws of thermodynamics.

    trust me
