I get what you are saying for sure.
And I'm reeling a bit - no install consideration at all?
That's insanity.
Bear in mind, I'm the son of a college math professor and professional musician. If there isn't both an art and engineering aspect to any hobby, I'm not interested - and I fully blame my parents for making me neither a left or right brained person. Damn them.
So I'm not saying doing anything for the purpose of just aesthetics - I just think of things from a show car perspective.
Think of mini trucks - anyone remember them? Man all these dead hobbies are depressing...
Most outsiders looked at them as stupid, over the top, and definitely had some paint schemes that were nothing but aesthetics - but that's the only purpose for paint, so I think that falls into the category of "serving it's purpose"...
My real point is, anyone who looked closer at those crazy trucks- there's a ludicrous amount of engineering to achieve their goals - and one huge goal was to be unique and creative. To contribute to the scene overall, rather than to bite everything your buddies already did.
So I just mean dressing up something that needs to be there for necessity anyway - there's always creative options. (1994 example)
