Thread: 2016 Porsche Macan S - stealth SQ build

    no, seriously!

You have one arc that could be done with stacked MDF, and the other surfaces are flat. Only real tricky part is the slanted side with the stairstep at the bottom. But if you're good with your tablesaw and angle measure-er, should be GTG.

I'd use 1/2" MDF and/or 1/2" baltic birch. Prolly baltic birch cause it's so small.

Tho your job would be monumentally easier if you found a way to magically move that amp.....

BTW, is the car 100% done minus the subwoofer? Maybe subwoofer and wiring cleanup?

OK, new idea. I'm looking at this picture:

Does your amp fit FLAT on the bottom left side of the pic, between the back of the trunk (tailgate) and that styrofoam piece?

If so, you can build a box alot like mine:

glass the entire bottom well, around the styrofoam, around the spare, down below where the battery is, all of it. In a shape that can be lifted straight up and out. The baffle is sunk down on the left side to make a platform for the amp. Sub to the right.

It would be almost exactly like my build. Except for you, you'd have a couple QD's to manage amp power and signals since that whole thing would have to lift out to get at the battery. QD harness wrapped up on the right side between the sub/wheel/right styrofoam.

    I need a smaller amp.

So I completed my custom molded fiberglass subwoofer enclosure investigation.

The Sundown Audio box contains approx 0.8cuft of packing peanuts.

I was able to dump about half of them into my cardboard form. That's only 0.4cu/ft. Ughh... I was hoping to get closer to 1.0cu/ft before all was said and done.

I need to leave about 3/4" to 1" clearance between the cargo floor cover and the top of the sub box. This will give the subs cone room to travel and not hit against the cargo floor cover.

If I pulled the amp out and used 100% of the space under the false floor for usable box volume I would still only be about 0.6cu/ft. This is not accounting for wall thickness in my fiberglass enclosures lay-up. After adding fiberglass, a top baffle, and accounting for displacement of the sub, the internal volume would fall under 0.5cu/ft. This enclosure would be too small and sound boomy. Low end extension would be sacrificed. Add to that, one of my criteria is that I still be able to fit a pair of jumper cables in here somewhere.

Looks like my baffle idea is still the best solution. Let's put it back together again...

Add wire ferrules for a finishing touch. Yes, I did crimp them. I just didn't show that step here:

    Now I need to:

1.) figure out how to cut deep rabbet grooves (3/8" x 1") around this thing so it will sit flush.
2.) install a prop rod to hold it up during service instead of relying on my snow scraper.
    3.) carpet the whole thing.
    4.) install a lift strap

So, I got a few more toys in earlier this week. Just in case I decide to run speakers in my rear doors.

You can save on the backside carpet if you want by using a black primer (or chalkboard paint, I love that stuff). You can leave it somewhat rough, it's expected in non visible areas (but never raw wood). I'd say two coats of filler primer plus three of a matte black would do very nicely.

And the rabbet will make an EXCELLENT place to halt the carpet upholstery. it makes the transition work almost foolproof and should look rather handsome.

This freaks my wife and kids out

It is audio related. Not some twisted fetish. Although, I think a red ball harness set would go nice with the microphones I plan on mounting on them.

your cats will see it as a weird kind of whatever-oddity until you put the eyes on. Then they freak the F out.

Kids do too. My oldest is growing into the beginning of his smart ass know it all teenage years. But, I know he has always been deathly scared of clowns and mannequins. That's what inspired me to put the googly eyes on the black felt one. Sit that staring at his bed at night and he does not move .
