Thread: Best foam or felt for dashmat?

Best foam or felt for dashmat?

    Hi All,
If I was making a dashmat to absorb or diffuse reflection, I know thicker is better, but will any old open cell foam do or is there something specific that's best?

Also, I might try some stuffed animals jammed into the corners of the dash, so I could open them up and refill them with the most appropriate foam/felt/polyfill?

    Cheers

Not sure if this works "over there..."

What is Britain's favourite owl? TheTeatOwl! No? Tough crowd...

From some further reading (my initial Google was reduced in effectiveness by spell correct) it looks like "acoustic felt" maybe the answer. I will of course try towels first

a towel or blanket could tell you if it's worthwhile making your own. i didn't gain any benefits from them in my iterations in this car.

In my last car I used a layer of MLV with Layer of Thinsulate on top of it wrapped in a black grill cloth bag my wife sewed up for me. It worked well for me and I'm planning the same in my new car.

I don't see the benefit of MLV on dash? The idea is to absorb/break up the wave, not reflect it. MLV is doing the same as your dash - reflecting. You want something thick and dense to reduce the reflections. IE felt or cotton fiber acoustic rolls.

I used the MLV to give weight to the dash mat and the Thinsulate top layer to absorb/break up the wave...worked in my install.

It is hard to beat evidence.
