I'd run a pair of these if budget ever allowed one day - Phoenix Gold SX2 1200.6
    Are you not entertained?!?!

Re: Best 6 channel SQ amp options

What *I* really want is an amp that just has a pool of power available (lets say 1200 watts, or example) and it allowed the 6 channels to use whatever they needed from that "pool" of power. That way, I'm not "wasting" so much power on my mid and tweeter channels when the midbass channels could actually use the extra power! When you think about it, it's kind of silly to have these "separated" channels for amps - would be so much nicer to just have a large "pool" of power that each channel could draw from.

Of course, I'm sure that is not quite as easy it sounds - and it would probably introduce some other "issues" that need to be addressed, such as specifying a "max" power amount for each channel, figuring out how to set gains correctly for that type of setup, etc - but I *hope* that amp manufacturers are working towards a goal like that. :-) Someone did mention a newer amp that did this to a degree, but still wasn't quite as "flexible" as what I'm talking about.

That just sounds like you want to go back to passive crossovers .

You don't need that much power. Your midbass at 80hz is only using like 25 out of 100w.

Surely you are not suggesting that anything over 25W RMS is "too much", even for midbass channels?? :-) I'm not sure what that table really means in terms of volume levels, but that table actually illustrates my point. With my 75W RMS x 6 amp, the vast majority of the power that is "dedicated" to a mid or tweeter channel will NEVER be used - and is completely "wasted" - whereas I may run out of power on my 4 ohm midbass channels at really loud volumes. It would be nice not to "waste" so much amp power. Wouldn't it be nice if that un-used power could be given to the midbass channels (or even a a sub channel) if/when needed?

What I'm talking about is nothing like "passive" setups - each channel would still be isolated in terms of configuration, crossovers, etc - but it would be nice if the unused power on the mid and high channels could be used elsewhere if/when needed instead of NEVER being used as it is now... Just having one big pool of power for all channels to draw from while all other aspects would still be "dedicated" for each channel.

The 1200W was just an example. You are probably correct that you wouldn't need that much if you could "pool" all of the power to be used on whatever channel actually needed it.

I picked up a Z150.6LX for less than that used and couldn't be happier.. But they are physically huge. It's all important for such a thing that you're confident in the seller. I knew the amp's history.

Sounds like a 4 channel and a small 2 channel are in order to match the actual power needed.

just do two 6ch amps and play the bridging game for all the power you need

    X2 on the Phoenix Gold SX2 1200.6
I have been using 1 for several months & have been very happy for the price paid ($250). It was "used" literally for a few hrs & sat in vehicle till sold to change for all matching equipment.

Well, yes, of course you could do something like that, but wouldn't it be nice if you didn't need to use multiple amps in the first place? It would just make so much more sense to have a single amp with a single "pool' of power that each channel could take from as needed, thereby not "wasting" so much power like we do know with our multichannel amps. Just about any amp will be wasting most of the power for tweeter/mid channels, for example (they don't sell amps with per-channel ratings small enough where you wouldn't be wasting most of it).

Maybe I need to invent such a thing. :-) I'll get to work on that right away....

Heck yeah. I really think 7 channel options (6 full range plus one mono sub channel) have been overlooked for way too long.
    Are you not entertained?!?!
