Ahhh...the missing bass in the corvette. Bro. I fought that battle for MONTHS. I finally figured out what causes it. Worth a read.

    Re: 1996 Corvette Build

I’m bringing this one back... Time for a revamp of the install. While I love the way it sounds I really miss being able to put things in the back. I’m ditching the Dayton subwoofers and I picked up a few of the Dayton Classic woofers. The issue with the subs in the OEM enclosures is that they were ever so slightly too deep and were not sealing completely against the baffle. The woofers are a tad more shallow and I’ve used them before as subs with satisfactory results... Besides at $25ea if they didn’t work I could find another use for them or I wasted $50... meh. I decided to throw em in quick and give a listen.

I did lose a TINY bit of really low-end authority but they still dig pretty deep and have a decent amount of punch to them. And that’s right out of the box with no break in. I’m happy enough that they will be staying in and the subs/box will either go in something else or I’ll sell it.

So the plan now is to run some new wires & make a new amp rack & floor so everything is one level. Maybe I’ll do something slick with a logo of some sort with some LED lights. The DSP will be getting pulled because the Excelon that’s in my Malibu will be going in this and the DSP in that is just as capable and I’ll be able to tune without digging my laptop out.

    Re: 1996 Corvette Build

I got a bit more done this weekend. The Kenwood Excelon 395 that was in my Malibu is now in. It was a lot harder than it should’ve been and I ended up breaking 2 dash pieces that are made of unobtanium. After a good bit of cursing and some minor surgery with some super glue I’m back in business.

    Deck installed:

While I was at it I pulled the DSP and the PPI Ion 5ch and temporarily hooked up one of my newly acquired old school amps.

The PPI was running 60w/ch into a pair of tweeters on the a-pillars as well as a pair of Infinity Reference 6.5” coaxes in the factory locations and about 350 or so into the 6.5” woofers. That Hifonics Europa is rated at 35x4 so I left the tweeters disconnected for now. I just wanted to see what this amp could do AND I wanted to make sure it actually worked as it’s about 25yrs old....

HOLY SHEET! That amp is 1/2 the power and it’s almost twice as loud, sounds better & has some serious balls. Needless to say it’ll be staying in. The stage is still dash high and the bass is plentiful. This car is not really meant to be an SQ car in the strictest sense, it just needs to compete with the engine/exhaust noise but, boy, with the engine off this car is a JOY to listen to. The wife made me a nice “Power of the Gods” sticker so I’m going to try to incorporate that somehow.

Now I’m trying to find more Hifonics amps for the Malibu. Until next time...

I found a Thor locally through Facebook marketplace for a price I couldn’t refuse. So the Europa will run the front coaxes & dash tweeters and the Thor will run the rear woofers. I got a bit more work done today and was in a groove until our washer broke so now I get to spend some more money... yay.

I still have to modify the amp rack and run some new wires for the Thor then it’s on to wire management & the new rear portion of the floor.

Did a little trimming on the trim panel for a better fit and got the support for the new false floor done along with a little extra something for the floor.

Now I’m waiting for the glue to dry. I still have to modify the amp rack yet plus run wires for the Thor as well as make the new floor. Then it’s upholstery & some finishing touches.

It’s coming along... just slowly. I painted the floor panel while I was at work today and applied the sticker this evening along with the LED strip. Now I need to figure out what color to do. I just hooked it up quick to test and take a picture.

Floor is in... just needs some carpet. Then it’s on to wiring and then should be about done.

It kind of looks the same but all the wiring is finally done, it’s in, functional and has a quick tune... meaning crossovers & gains are set along with some quick EQ using the head unit’s on board 13-band. My wife ALWAYS bitches about the smell of spray adhesive so carpet will have to wait until my lunch break Monday. That’s all that’s left to do.

It’s done. I’m kind of underwhelmed. It doesn’t look bad but it’ll work. It’s mostly the cutout in the floor that I’m not thrilled with but the cover will be installed about 98-99% of the time so I’m not planning to redo it any time soon.

    Re: 1996 Corvette Build

you might be able to take out the corner/false floor supports and put them on the underside of the panel, maybe some 2" diameter dowels. put some carpet on the bottom so they don't disrupt the white paint.
