Re: Why 'downfire' a subwoofer ?

"Sweat Equity" is just a figure of speech. It means putting effort into trying different things to see what works best. This is why I encourage everyone to build a test box that can be easily moved around even if it means using a smaller subwoofer than desired for a bit so they can get the info they need to minimize failure in the big build. Last thing you want is for your bass to be wonky because you didn't play with placement BEFORE making things really hard to adjust. Perfect example is a guy on this forum was having problems with his 15" sub playing above about 50-60hz even with the lowpass filter bypassed. Only way it could be aimed because of the sheer size of it in a compact sedan was up. I moved that HEAVY box and sub a few inches over to the right in his trunk and the missing bass suddenly appeared. Yes he confirmed with the rta. Had his box have been nearly impossible to move we would have never known that just a few inches of placement difference would make all the difference in the world for sub to midbass transition. So, "sweat equity" has its place because you never know until you try. The cabin of a vehicle is a terrible place to try to get good linear flat sound but that's what makes it so fun and frustrating at the same time.
They might say "don't try this at home" but nothing about not trying it at your friend's house.
