    Re: Tune #3

So I have been doing some reading on comb filtering from reflections, and I believe this may be part of my problem. So I'm curious what I could do to combat the issue. I'm thinking about some of those "back-wave blocks" on the inside of the door. Would something like that show me some improvement? Perhaps if I moved my dashboard speaker pods a little more to find a better sweet spot? However it seems the woofs in the doors are causing those big dips. Correct?

The journey continues. Thanks for reading!

Blockbuster, post that graph with 1/3 octave smoothing. I think you may be over obsessed with trying to get every little tiny dip and ripple perfectly flat which will drive anyone crazy. Also, how are you taking measurements with the microphone?

First, I managed to figure out my sub crossover issue.....sort of. I can now get my box to play to 80hz-ish and can flatten it out with some serious EQ. It seems my desire to be a basshead with a SQ front end is proving to be a major challenge. LOL. My based up house curve was essentially giving me a 60hz crossover due to being so freaking loud - and trying to get down to +6 db @ 80hz and 0db @ 200hz. Tuning to that curve was simply not letting my sub stretch that far, that loud.

So I have changed my curve a little bit and got a nicer slope from sub to woofs, not great, but better. Lessons learned! I have noticed however, that my response from 200-2000 seems to be identical, despite fresh tunes with different crossover points. I know that there is still some room for improvement on the overall tune, but I'm noticing the same cancellation/deconstruction spots at 220 and 345 as well as that trough from 600-800 (this is less of a worry).

So my questions are: Is it possible to tell what is causing this cancellation? Is it install related? Is it equipment related? Is it crossover/tune related? Or is it just something I have to live with? Comb filtering?
In theory, would sealed boxes in the doors eliminate this with a more predictable response? Or would it be same shit different pile?

This is my tune#3 (blue) and my tune#4, with the newer curve (red). My passenger and driver sides show a very flat response in these areas, when played by them selves, but as soon as I sum the two sides, I get the above graphs. So please let me know what you think. You won't hurt my feelings, so be brutal.
those skinny dips at 220 and 345 should be ignored. Theyre not wide enough and are most likely cancellations caused by the car. as far as saying what we think of your tune, well, unfortunately, an rta can only tell us that your frequency response is at least somewhat in check.

this. dont bother with the little stuff. paint with broad strokes. Funny enough, my car always sounds best whenever i do a "super rough tune" and only use like 7 eq bands lol

I appreciate both of the replies. It is actually very reassuring to hear this. I will try to reel myself in a bit with the nitpicking. I'm honestly pretty happy with the sound, just trying to soak up some knowledge. The curve is good, I just can't quite get the tones correct.

    Thanks Skiz and JC!

Here we are at 1/3. You are 100% correct, I have been obsessing juuust a touch. This graph will at least help me sleep tonight.

Edit: I take measurements sitting in the seat with the mic pointed up - doing little circles around each ear. Measurements taken with no smoothing, then flattened to 1/12 and EQ'd accordingly. I'm definitely open to suggestions. Cheers.

Now that looks right, maybe a touch hot on the tweeters but that is a matter of personal preference only you can decide. I’m with Nick in that when I get too crazy with the EQ it sometimes doesn’t sound as good as it does with less. Nick is the expert here and I’m just an enthusiast who spends too much time on this stuff. I may tune once a month or less and he probably does it twice a day, lol. I also use broad strokes from my left ear to my right ear keeping the microphone tight to my head and at a slight angle (not totally vertical) using the 90-degree calibration file for the microphone. I run the microphone back and forth until I have 60 averages for each measurement. When I’m roughing it in though I use as little as 10 averages to speed things up. I don’t make little circles at each ear.
