You got me.
More pics of my build and the boot of one I’m sorting for the euros (I got an invite for the corsa, but turned down the spot so I could focus on doing my team mates car...)
so his car started the boot build story with a pair of hybrid unity u5a class d 5 channels, pic is present in a previous post...
now he went and changed amps due to a team mate selling his car that also had an invite for the euros, plus I upgraded to a DSP Ultra, so he also had the DSP Pro 2 off me...
so the boot has changed a little in terms of layout, we now have a pair of Zapcos, a z150.6ii and a recently painted black z1kd, so the plan is to paint the z1kd satin black to match the processor on the other side and then cut a couple of layers, the first being a framing panel in Perspex and the a 12mm layer at the top, it will basically make the dsp and right amp look the same size and the sub and zapco above it be framed nicely also
the wiring is a temporary measure as that’s next weekends mission along with the top plate and Perspex layer, I only get to play at weekends and so he could have sound again after removing his dsp 2 and hybrids and changing the layout it is a temporary fix for the week to get him sound
A bit more on mine, the observant amongst you will have noticed my birch ply dash top had its wings clipped and 20cm cut off each side... now I knew where I wanted the speakers to sit and the aiming of them also...
so I started off with my little drums in the corners, positioned them a little bit more on axis (thanks to lojze for that one! LB above!) and marked on the a pillar a rough height, then with the drums in situ I whipped the passenger side driver out and dropped my laser aiming device in and found it aimed up at the screen headliner joint approx 8” out of the corner
so once I had the aim right for the passenger side and double checked the drivers side was ok in a similar position i refitted my 20cm cutout sections and made the back corner piece that will sit over the sides of the cross dash strengthening bar as I couldn’t be bothered to remove it and cut it off, and it gives a nice anchor point also
sp I rebates the underside so you now have to remove the centre section and slide the outer pieces onwards, this is fine as the outer pieces also fit slightly into the window rebate in the a-pillar
then I cut four pieces which will be the inner sides of each side pod and also the outer sides of the centre midbass/sub locations so when it’s all in place the two will match upto each other and match, the front angled cutout is so it doesn’t get in the way of the opposite side listening position, I will make both sides match and taper up to a rounded front edge I think...
more pics...
So once I knew my aim I then attached the rings I cut in the week to take satori mw16p-4 drivers onto a side piece and the same height off the front edge of the sections, then I added a section of dowel which will be removed once I’ve built the pod sides and back proper, it’s 10cm tall around the part where it meets the window plus an extra 12mm of ply for the lid, this then keeps the enclosure 5-6mm under the preset limits of the Emma competition rules
A bit more build, fixing to the pillar (basically there’s a large flat area so I cut a panel that roughly fitted and banged a self drilling screw in the middle, this will be swapped for a cap head in time and a rivnut) sorted to make sure the enclosures don’t move, then glass it in also put a rivnut into the cross beam for an M4 fixing in each, both easy to access through the speaker hole
So the fixings to the side and into the cross tube are complimented by a plate at each front edge, this is then screwed so I can take the centre out and refit it in the same place with ease, it will always be in the same place every time gove or take 0.5mm I reckon 👍🏼 The centre board has three screws in it currently, I may see about some way of fixing it down maybe with a removable front section that bolts in or something, not decided yet...
I will also be fitting a 10.5” tablet in the centre so it’s possible I can hide something behind that as an access panel to get in and bolt it down, not sure about rivnut a as yet, may need to upgrade the baby sized m4 ones for M5 so I can get em nice and tight without fear of stripping threads out... not sure as yet... I suppose belt and braces is weld some nuts in the top of the tube... not sure yet... if also considered drilling through the tube and using m4 cap heads from underneath and nutting and bolting it all down with nyloks, at least then there is no chance of leaving anything broken in to prevent the dash being removed
A bit more on the seat with the zapcos and the helix dsp...
Glassed the side pieces upto fit nice and snug, made the bottom section first layer in 6mm sacrificial mdf and then copied it into 15mm birch so I can fix to it, then rebated the birch for the Perspex edge lighting panel and the side supports to locate into, I also trimmed the sub surround piece as we are going with factory carpet on the sides and sub surround, a couple of windows to show off the cables, and also a third layer as a grill for the lot effectively the top panel is undecided, but I’m heading towards dark grey alcantara upto yet...
a bit of cable porn and a few more progress pics of the seat ibiza

and some more of mine from last week too very happy with the stage width and depth as the speakers are currently, will now rebuild the front end properly to contain a sub as i tested with a 6.5" front hybrid imagine sub in the dash, as tests go it went exceptionally well! played flat to 20 with a few tweaks of 2-3db up and down in places... the 6.5 is no good for below 45-50hz from a quick test...
also tried the two seas 8" in a 34 litre enclosure that was huge and ugly but it did the job, i will now build a more aesthetically pleasing dash to contain both the satori MB16P and sb29C004 tweeters and ordered a sb acoustics 10" shallow subwoofer in dual 3 ohm also, hopefully the sub will perform well enough for sq competition that i wont need anything in the boot... so i can do a bit of spl type stuff in there and a flat amp rack for the zapco 150.6ap and the dsp ultra plus a spare battery
a load of random pictures of mine to follow...
Another rca made... coaxial digital item this time around with van damme 75ohm coaxial cable and black/gold rean plugs... the plugs have been ordered so they match the zapco 150.6ap amps colours, along with black and gold techflex when the time comes to cable mine properly
