MMATS Amplifier - Replacing The Noisy Fan.

I think I saw another post somewhere, about how a member had replaced the fan on his MMATS amp.
As I recall, he used a Noctua fan (which might be better than the ones I used).
At any rate, I figured I'd give a step-by-step on how to replace the fan in a MMATS amp.
I did both my MMATS amps, and the whole process took about 20 minutes (10 mins per amp).

First of all, here is the link to buying the fan:

    Noctua Fan:
    https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Coolin...s%2C200&sr=8-3

    Here's what I ended-up using:
    https://www.amazon.com/2-packs-0-10A...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

First, you need to remove the top plate from the amp, by unscrewing the 4 allen bolts at each corner:

Here's a 'guts shot' of the MMATS HiFi-6150. It's a stout little beast.
They maximized real estate by mounting the PC boards upright (kinda like what Mosconi does).

MMATS uses Fujicon capacitors. Not the best, but far from the worst. Comparable to Nichicon.

Remove the 2-pin connector for the fan. Remember which way the plug is positioned. (if you forget, then I've detailed it below)

Carefully cut the top edge of the fan. It is glued to the amp chassis with silicone.

After cutting it, I got in there with a very small flat screwdriver and pried it away from the chassis.
Then just pull it away, and clean the silicone from the amp chassis.

Then apply some glue (or silicone) to the four corners of the new fan.
I used Gorilla glue. Notice I got a drop on the fan blade... fffaaaa! I cleaned that off before installing it.

Then just press it back into place. I also added a drop of Krazy Glue, to quickly hold it there, while the Gorilla Glue dried.

Note: when putting the new fan in; the connector should have the white plastic facing the SCR chip (right beside the pins on the PC board).

The other side of the connector has two exposed metal pieces. This faces away from the SCR.

Re: MMATS Amplifier - Replacing The Noisy Fan.

Is there an issue with the fan that comes with the amplifier or is it a noisy fan that might be heard if mounted in the regular cab pickup? If so I would think MMats should include a better fan for the price point they are at assuming a bunch of things about cost of production. Nice write up

I would love to get one of those amplifiers on my test bench and compare it to less costly class D and A/B amplifiers I have with some high end speakers.

Re: MMATS Amplifier - Replacing The Noisy Fan.

Its been labelled a noisy fan, but I have mine installed in a truck cab and have not noticed the fan noise too much. Certainly not enough to take away from my listening experience. Just a noob opinion though. ;-)

The fan is dead silent, when it's new... but after about 6 months, it gets kinda loud.
This is my only gripe with MMATS amplifiers.

Ya, I'd say they are using cheap fans. Could easily be overted by using a decent fan in the first place.

Noctua is definitely the way to go if you want to replace a fan

I've contemplated doing the same. I only really notice the fan if I have no music playing though.

Re: MMATS Amplifier - Replacing The Noisy Fan.

I just followed this great tutorial and successfully swapped the stock fan for a Noctua one. Piece of cake, thanks Jim.

I'll be doing my fan swap shortly, too... Is the Noctua much quieter?

Re: MMATS Amplifier - Replacing The Noisy Fan.

Its supposed to be, but I only put the fan in tonight, and haven't got the amp back in.
The pros and cons of the fan so far:
Multiple speed options and connection options are nice and I'm sure make the fan very versatile. You can immediately see its a quality part. However, the cord is quite a bit longer than the stock fan, especially with the cord extensions (speed and plug combo). I ended up gently folding the cord up a few times and used some heat shrink to keep it together and get the cord to a workable length.
I'll post again in a few days when the system is up and running again.
