We helped the Afghan rebels against Russia. In retrospect, did we take the wrong side?

It didn't help matters but the part that really helped fuel their cause against us was that the minute the Russians packed up and went home we just stopped sending money. Essentially we help turn Afghanistan into smoldering crater, the Russians would have pacified the country in a couple weeks had we not been pumping weapons and money into the mujaheddin. The reason groups like the Taliban seemingly have the support of the people is based on two things 1. Fear , people are afraid to speak out or they will be killed (just like in Germany in the 30's not every German was a Nazi not every Muslim is a terrorist) 2. they build things the population needs and wants. They may not have massive coffers to build a power station. hospitals, or even water treatment plans but they have money to build schools and housing which is more than we ever did. They may be crazy radicals the will kill anyone that doesn't believe exactly what they say and do but it's hard to say you hate them and love America when the US was the one that stopped giving shit when the Russians left.

Never EVER trust an Illinois Democrat..... Ever.
would an Illinois republican be any better, or do they even exist
Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger the Illinois Republican and Air Force veteran.
“I haven’t heard back from anyone, I don’t even know who my White House liaison is, which is supposed to be creating this relationship,” Kinzinger added. ” So now we find ourselves in a situation where I think the president has made the decision correctly that the cost of using chemical weapons should far exceed the benefit that anybody gains from it and he’s trying to build a relationship with Congress and there’s a trust deficit.”
