is the qts not real low for ib use in door?
I want a set real bad, but want them to work for my current ride
The Qts really just gives you an idea of what your low end roll off looks like. Typically, lower QTS drivers will start rolling off at a sooner point but at a less steep slope, whereas higher Qts drivers extend deeper before rolling off at a steeper slope. The FS is helpful in seeing where this sort of centers around. That's not a very scientific explanation, but it's easier to understand it that way. In otherwords, it's no problem to have a lower Qts driver like this TM65. It will start rolling off sooner in frequency, but will do so at a shallower slope and has a very low 44hz FS for a 6.5" driver. With that low fs and gobs of linear stroke, it should be an excellent performer.
depends on what Vas is. You are looking at the relationship between Vas and Qts. Typically you can use just these two parameters and determine what size enclosure works best without having to model the specs. With these, Vas is about 0.65ft^3. A door is in the ballpark of 5ft^3 if assuming completely sealed. So, you've got a natural air spring force of 0.65ft^3, with a low Qts (driver is minimally damped) in a large enclosure... From the specs, I agree that it doesn't seem suited for door use WHEN NOT HIGH-PASSED. But, as Jason pointed out, if you use a HPF of something like 80hz, it'll mitigate the Qts/Vas concern. This also helps stay out of the region where THD increases as you get closer to Fs (44hz).
IMHO, the overall Le on these is rather high for 2-way use. Based on the data presented, I'd expect it to roll off earlier than most other drivers intended for crossing to a tweeter in the typical 2-3khz range. I think Nick set out to make this a shallow mount midbass, in which case with a proper HPF, I think it's a great performer. Otherwise, it reminds me a lot of the Exodus Anarchy in that for 2-way use, it's wouldn't be my first choice.
5cu ft? Them's some big doors!
Mine have typically been around 2.5-3.5 cubic feet. But then again, my cars are usually sporty compacts.
I agree, I wouldnt be looking at this driver as my solution for a 2-way. It looks killer for a midbass application though. And that super shallow mounting depth is nuts.
I mounted the anarchy 6.5s in my doors and thought they sounded horrible. and they were crossed on bottom at 80 and on top at 500. was not impressed with them at all, and wouldnt attempt to make them work in that location. the alpine spx pros are worlds better sounding in my door. was happy with the re xxx's as well. but cant keep them alive for more than a couple weeks, and not sure what is killing them.
the SI's may be the way to go when I am ready to change
so thanks for the input guys
