If my speakers can handle X amount of watts, then why should I get an amp that is 2 times as many watts?
Because . . . Gentle soft waves (softly curving waves) are cleaner/clearer sounding!
As waves square off, the distortion and heat rise.
Dirty power (clipped waves) are harmful or bad. Your ability to spend more money increases.
Power is cheap and available in a tiny but still capable footprint these days compared to the old days. There's really no excuse to not have plenty of power on hand to do what you need cleanly. I'm still a fan of quality over quantity most of the time but even that comes at a very good price unless you go all esoteric. Even class a/b amps have gotten smaller. Love me some good a/b power:)

I think I can hear a difference between class A and other classes. I believe it has to do with even order distortion , as opposed to odd order distortion.
I just prefer a/b for mids and highs. If I went back to class D I'd do JL XD amps.
Do not buy an amplifier and then cause it to clip on a regular basis [heat will increase]. New equipment will be needed sooner . . .Quote:
