Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Well. Hello there. Welcome back, for another edition of... chithead starts a build log. You're all familiar with the show... so let's get started.
Here we have our latest acquisition - a 2003 Corvette Z06:

She's in pretty good shape for the year. My first Corvette, and am already in love with this black beauty. Definitely way more than I was expecting the car to be in every category. Let's take a look at some of the areas that need attention.
Doors:

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Did a little digging, and have discovered a few things. Such as this peeking out from the center console behind the passenger seat:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d80ca71d_c.jpg
Pulled both wires out, looks to be a 2-channel RCA and possibly a remote turn-on wire - perhaps for a mono amp and subwoofer that are not in there anymore:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d35c830f_c.jpg
Found an awesome pattern to build a divider wall that helps reduce in cabin noise from the trunk area, might use this to start the subwoofer enclosure/amp rack:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7ef9d891_c.jpg
She cleans up rather nice:

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Did the first audio mod today: From, no antenna:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f76381d9_c.jpg
To... antenna!
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5cc4896e_c.jpg
Dash kit arrived today as well:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aabc9bfd_c.jpg
Requires relocating the temperature controls, and removing or cutting a bracket in the dash. At least they give you this nifty template for drilling:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e973d1f4_c.jpg
Also scored a, "used" dash pad that looks to be brand new from a place I'm ordering parts on eBay:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7f67cd25_c.jpg
My first time using a dash pad. Thought what the heck, price was good, and couldn't hurt to protect the dash.

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Playing around with some speaker placement. Hoping to use a set of 8" subs for midbass, and single 12" sub for bass, or maybe use two in IB configuration by modifying that divider wall template just a bit? Definitely open to ideas/opinions regarding this:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8568cfbb_c.jpg
Thinking a 8" behind each seat, over near where the factory 5.25" speakers are mounted:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a9fc7ffc_c.jpg
An IDMAX 12 fits between the trunk cubby and the ledge rather easily:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cee21fc4_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...acedf1e8_c.jpg
This is where we're at so far. I like the idea of a ported enclosure with a single subwoofer for ease of installation and enjoyment, but have also considered doing a clamshell IB wall to fit two IDMAX 12's in the same middle spot there.
Head unit will most likely be the Alpine ILX-407 that I purchased for the Mustang before it went bye-bye. Pretty good source unit with everything I like to have on a daily basis. Plus, capability to utilize a front and rear camera.
Everything else is a toss up at this point.

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
I know for a fact these cars can sound good...
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
I feel somewhat responsible for this car. You have 2 months. :D
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
A little progress today. The Alpine iDA-X305S that was installed in the car, is out. And an iLX-407 with dash kit is in.
How it was starting out this morning:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...be4bd6af_c.jpg
Wasn't too terribly difficult removing the console, and nothing broke! Well, nothing I removed broke. Anywho, trim pieces removed:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ba8cf6f5_c.jpg
Yucky chucky... oh and guess where the other end of that RCA cable went? Not to the head unit:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e3cf1505_c.jpg
iDA-X305S removed, found where the remote turn on wire went:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3040e42d_c.jpg
Also found an ai-net connector and pink w/black stripe mute wire going to the driver side, guess maybe they had a Parrot Bluetooth at one point? Not in there now though:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...172a7c9b_c.jpg
And also some good news, had already assumed there was some sort of adapter to make the radio work in the car, and here it is:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e3c31884_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...abdf9e99_c.jpg
Everything out! Now we MODIFY!!!

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
A lot of double din installs I've watched - they cut the brackets in the dash. I didn't like this. Not one bit. Pet peeve maybe? I dunno. Knew right from the beginning I'd be taking the harder path. Getting ready, to drill some rivets:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...10cb2028_c.jpg
Two done, six more to go:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...655dedbf_c.jpg
Took a break right here though to do the HVAC controls relocation using the supplied template:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d35337a6_c.jpg
Wasn't too difficult. Getting all eight rivets out though, was a pain in the boo-hiney. But it's done:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5cef265a_c.jpg
HVAC controls relocated perfectly:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...43f97557_c.jpg
Also took this opportunity to install a new key trim piece:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...044c4ae8_c.jpg
See the broken pieces:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...527a7739_c.jpg
And new one all clicked onto the switch:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ed1514d0_c.jpg
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
The double din trim piece next to the OEM trim:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a8d90b03_c.jpg
So the brackets in the kit work. But alignment, wasn't so great with these. Had to make two modifications on each one to get a much nicer fit into the new trim opening. Just clip here, and drill here:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...04a674a7_c.jpg
Connected and modified the Axxess harness more to my particular liking:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9d9480e2_c.jpg
And here is everything put back together:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b48a6a11_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bb01e16b_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b575e9f_c.jpg
And... it was at this point I realized, the antenna was connected, USB cable plugged in, fuel door switch, traction control, airbag light, all hooked back up. Except the radio harness. Forgot to plug in the frickin' radio harness. Oh well. Didn't take long to take everything back apart, plug it in, and here we go:

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Replaced sparks plugs yesterday. Already did the wires after one fell apart. As I changed them, three disintegrated in my hands. Pretty sure they were the original wires. The plugs didn't look to be much newer:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...40e9162e_c.jpg
I mean, GM platinum plugs look to have thinner electrodes, but these were almost wore down to the size of a needle:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7da0e8a5_c.jpg
All buttoned up and cleaned a little:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7da0e8a5_c.jpg
Or... so I thought. Took her for a spin, and there was definitely more power, but a hesitation and misfire now. Uh oh. Immediately remembered when tightening the furthest back plug on the driver's side, I heard a crack. Thought maybe the porcelain had cracked? At least it was worth checking out. Perhaps the crack was causing a jump from the plug over to the block? Yeah, was a bit more than that:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...219d3281_c.jpg
Replaced that plug, and geez Louise does this car haul the mail now. It's ridiculous what just plugs and wires did.
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
See if they will warranty that plug

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Started on some tweeter mounts. Look like crap so far, but just playing around with some ideas. Cut about an inch off of some PVC caps, and JB Welded the rear mount securement brackets for some Image Dynamics XS28 tweeters on there. They're definitely solid after the JB Weld cured. Should allow for some decent aiming once secured to the brackets I'm pondering on making for the doors:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...64deea19_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...580fd899_c.jpg
Also drawing up some plans for a multi-piece baffle that will semi-seal the trunk area from the cabin. Effectively reducing some of the road noise these Z06 cars are known for, but also giving a 13" tall by 28" wide angled baffle for mounting two IB subwoofers. And also offering up room on each side for 1/2 cube enclosures to use for midbasses. Updates on this course of action should be arriving soon.
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Started putting together a rough template of this multi-piece baffle idea. First step, cut to 17 inches:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e3f56ccc_c.jpg
Steps two through thirty-four were a bit more complicated:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f017f78e_c.jpg
And now after all that, have to calculate a 200 and 7/8" radius for the top. How in the... well. Easiest way I could come up with to do it, measure out 200 and 7/8 inches:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...908ea559_c.jpg
Got that top arc:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e67b7eb9_c.jpg
Transferred that final top measurement over to some super thin plywood to mess around with:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...081a4cd0_c.jpg
Annnddddddd... Chit. It don't fit:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...86d72281_c.jpg
Using the bottom part of this baffle though:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...75725346_c.jpg
Determines we need to make some adjustments to the extended portion:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0195e709_c.jpg
Will work on that more tomorrow. Getting dark out for tonight. But so far, I think this will work out.

Soooo... on a hunch... took it upon myself to try using another form of media for template making:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...96461011_c.jpg

Definitely helped get way closer to final sizing:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...84fcbe27_c.jpg
And, bam! Here we go:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5dff0fc5_c.jpg
Easy peezy! Now we just make a mirror copy, cut two triangles, and a big ole rectangle that should be 12.5" high by 28.5" long
https://media.tenor.com/bRCq925fqQcA...the-kicker.gif
It's not. Now it's only 11" high? What the what? I measured this so many times, why isn't it lining up? Because I was measuring from the trunk.
Let me say it again.
Measuring.
From.
The trunk.
And this baffle, is on the cabin side. NOT, the trunk side.
https://i.giphy.com/media/nqH0tNTAXXfwOBzJMs/200w.webp
Ahhh, well. Whatever. Pretty sure it can be salvaged by just moving the baffle back a bit, almost creating a, "Z" like structure. No worries.
Can we fix it, yes we can!!!

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Welp. That might have been a complete waste. We shall see.
Decided to head in a completely different direction. Though it is a direction that will have a higher chance of being installed for once!
Equipment list is now:
Kicker Q-Class QS 6375" components
Kicker Q-Class Comp-Q 12" dual 2-ohm Subwoofer
Kicker CX360.4 amplifier
Kicker CX1200.1 amplifier
Planning to wire the sub at 4-ohms to keep the CX1200.1 from pulling a lot of current. Should help it blend better with the component set too. Also wanting to use the passive crossovers, but take advantage of the bi-amp capabilities they offer. The Alpine has a basic EQ, but does offer time alignment on each channel, so can still tune the setup a little bit once installed.
The QSS674 components already arrived, still waiting on everything else:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2ec6e6d8_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c528111_c.jpg
These some beefy mids:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a4dccfb2_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ec036a92_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...758eb2fb_c.jpg
The tweeters are actually larger than I thought. Hoped to mount in the A-pillars, but may have to go into the upper portion of the door panels near the handles/window switches.
Also grabbed a set of the Metra door adapters to use and modify a bit:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8fc55f91_c.jpg
Hopefully some more updates will be arriving soon!

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Wanted to ask some opinions on a few things if anyone would like to chime in with their advice and experience.
This is the area on the door panels I am thinking of mounting the tweeters. Only the driver's side has a vent in it, the passenger side does not. But it is a very similar shape, with the same angle at the top side near the window:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d2fcd6a3_c.jpg
The location is approximately 10-12 inches below ear height. I measured from the center of my nose, head all the way back against the headrest, and got 31 inches to the driver's side spot, and 49 inches to the passenger side. Mids in the factory locations down bottom would be 36" to the driver's side, 51 inches to the passenger side:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bb6a914d_c.jpg
A-pillars, while having a flat spot towards the dash side, also have a defrost vent in them, and still aren't wide enough for these tweeters to mount using the included hardware. Would require some custom fabrication to fit them. The only other flat spot on the pillars is towards the top, and aims towards the windshield.
What about subwoofer spot? Logic is telling me that having it as far back, in that rear well or cubby would offer more distance for better response. But continuing with a baffle to seal up the trunk would reduce interior cabin noise. And there is still room to build and enclosure there on that, "shelf" behind the seats.
Thoughts? I-dears? Oh-pin-yuns?
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
So that ^^^ not so great. Can't believe how many Vette owners on the forums recommended that spot and all seem to use it. Some even just mount the tweeters right into the handle, "cup" and fire them through the handle. Pass. That was not an ideal location at all in my opinion.
This is the test rig I used yesterday to play around. Don't judge me! Didn't feel like ripping the dash apart, so I just used some old wiring and the Alpine iDA-X305S that was in the car originally for quick listening:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9532dc39_c.jpg
Moved the tweeters up to the dash, right at the base of the pillars - this was better. But still, "shouty" - not sure the best word to describe it. Just, in your face. Not that great either. Tried moving them up, up higher, up highest to the visor, just all over. Was not getting the sound I'm looking for. Even went back to the doors to compare, and while the shouty went away, they are just super bright near the handle and didn't image as good. Wasn't bad, but had this, "rainbow" arc to them from left to right. And did I mention they were bright? Like, bright bright. Like caught in the deadlights bright. Anyways, back up to the dash, and then I pushed them back to the windshield.
Whoa.
Like, whoa.
Like, lights from heaven raining down and angels in harmony whoa. It was, incredible. I've not heard anything like this, in any of my previous half-azz installs. This was the sweet spot:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ee861192_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c419d295_c.jpg
Now to make that happen somehow. Oh, this was the test sub - Pioneer Stage 4 TS-W252PRS 10" in a ported enclosure. If anyone has been curious about these, do it. This mamma jamma was IMPRESSIVE:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ceaf08ea_c.jpg

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
So this is where I hoped to mount the amps, one amp, one crossover behind each seat:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e38edab0_c.jpg
Yeah, no. The seats touch them. Crap. Oh well. May have to move those up onto that tray area. They arrived Friday:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b028a153_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ae3a3fcf_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...158e3187_c.jpg
Good build quality. Solid, terminals have a nice heft to them. Don't twist or wiggle when you're tightening. The knobs felt solid too when adjusting. Should work good.
Second camera arrived Friday too - now we can have front and rear visibility for more safety:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...df90748d_c.jpg
And guess what arrived yesterday, in the middle of those listening tests:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...83bcd835_c.jpg
Kinda plain though:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...585e692f_c.jpg
But, dadgum check out this motor:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b8f11b06_c.jpg
Baby got back:

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Started modifying the previous trunk baffle. Sealing up the center section where there would have been a tilted baffle for a pair of IB subs. Still angled the bottom though, to allow complete access to the cubby on the trunk side. May end up putting covers over the three cubbies, and wanted space for those:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2cd91e5f_c.jpg
Have some... interesting... ideas on how to do the subwoofer enclosure. Amplifiers and crossovers will mount towards the front, on the floor, which will allow easy wiring and keep them in the cabin for cooling. Speaker wire arrived:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c1606e7c_c.jpg
Also ordered a set of my most favorite speaker baffles:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...dbfdd07d_c.jpg
They're ummmm... a little snugger than usual. Really puts the size of these motors into perspective:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5a954356_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3df3744c_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aa651448_c.jpg
Might have to modify those just a bit so there is more room around the basket.
-

Guess you’ll have to order the magnums next time.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e46a53b3_c.jpg
Looking at this particular layout for the amplifiers and crossovers - should make for a tidy wiring setup and still allow room for the subwoofer behind there:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...de849ff3_c.jpg
-
Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
More goodies arriving. A bit overkill, but needed them for a lot of other projects too:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fc1ae22e_c.jpg
First time using fork connectors:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d157e9a7_c.jpg
Setting up to see if we can make this look pretty neat:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...144557d8_c.jpg
And, first layout - this is how I pictured the wiring in my head when planning all this. Of course the reality is there isn't enough room to keep it flat like that. But if there was more room, this would be a cool way to run everything:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7a998729_c.jpg
This will be the more sensible setup, stacking positives and negatives to form a, "square" run - allows for RCAs and such to fit neat and tidy:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6b781a78_c.jpg
Proof, is in the pudding:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e4c7a06b_c.jpg
Dual amplifier kit arrived yesterday afternoon:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5ca8ce0a_c.jpg
And some PC case fan screws - you gonna have to trust me on this one:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fe2b29bc_c.jpg
Still waiting on techflex and heatshrink to cover all the wires. Now we can move forward with the subwoofer enclosure portion on this baffle.
Also thought up with a super trick idea on how to finish the inside of this amp rack. The crossovers actually sparked some inspiration.

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
Got to work on the baffles a bit more. Going to try those silicone baffles as they are for now. But I did punch out new openings for all 12 screws into each mid/woofer:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7fcbfe93_c.jpg
Found out you can roll those baffles up a bit more, so there may be enough airspace from the basket. But, now the motor will be more exposed to elements, soooo catch 22:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...da3e2b51_c.jpg
The PC case fan screws didn't work out - weren't long enough to go through the basket and the baffle. Might have worked with just a strip of butyl adhesive or some foam gasket, but not the silicone. Just used some other screws I already had to mount them:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b322eae8_c.jpg
Kicker provides both a grille that locks on, and also a trim ring. Decided to add the trim ring to help keep the baffle spread outwards, and also you know... dresses things up a good bit:

Re: Chithead's 2003 Corvette Z06
A little more work done tonight. All exterior bulbs are now Sylvania LED. Turn signals, marker lights, tail lights, license plate lights, reverse lights, and headlights. Used a hyper flash relay from eBay that didn't work until I figured out where it actually splices into the harness at. Now the turn signals seem to flash correctly, but the hazard flashers are fast. Oh well. While the rear lights were out, might as well install the reverse camera:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...656492ec_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0967b643_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...77950802_c.jpg
Used the antenna plug to secure the camera wire. First, we make-a the hole:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...943a1a23_c.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8b83cdbd_c.jpg

Well. Guess what didn't fit in the car.
Anyone who guessed the amp rack / baffle, you win!!!
Was about to start working on the subwoofer enclosure portion when something said, "Hey dummy - how do you know it'll even fit?"
Well, it didn't. Took me a day to think of something though. Decided to separate into two pieces. Was thinking three, but finally figured out how to do just two. Here it is after some surgery:

Why the funny shape you are asking now: Three reasons.
One - needed to be able to fit it into the car for sure this time.
Two - needed a spot to mount the distribution block and subwoofer terminal.
Three - had a brainstorm on how the subwoofer enclosure could be taken up a few notches, and really integrate into the car styling better.
Ok, here we go! Placing the baffle into the car:

Some evidence of how this angled shape is working out perfectly:

And then you just slide the other side back until, boom:

And then the amp rack portion sets in there perfectly:
