A Different Sort of Build Thread
Recently my 2006 GTO developed a low oil pressure issue. After lots of hard work installing a new oil pump the diagnosis was that there was internal engine damage. So last week a friend and I pulled the engine out of my GTO to find the exact problem and begin the process of fixing it.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps9efb24b5.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps1a76ebef.jpg
Once the engine was out of the car we loaded it into my truck and the fun began.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps04bc0385.jpg
My intake ports were full of oil.

These are small issue that could be fixed pretty easily.
So at this point it's time to remove the lifters and inspect them for any unusual wear. Sure enough I find one that's in bad shape. Interestingly enough, this particular lifter has always been loud which leads me to believe that it was bad or dirty when it was installed.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Now the holes you see in the crank are there for balancing purposes. Whenever you change anything about the rotating assembly, you have to balance it. That was never done in this case. That is very bad.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psbd00360a.jpg
So the low oil pressure issue is due to the fact that every bearing in my engine has been destroyed slowly over time. I also know why the engine never really made the power it was expected to make.
So what am I going to do? Well I'm going to make it bigger and better. Yes, I'm adding some cubic inches to the engine by stroking it. It's going from a 6.0L (364) to a 6.2 (402) and I'm doing the work myself.
As of this post the block only has a few things left to be removed before it goes into the washer to be prepped for machine work.
Here are some new parts that will go into the engine as it's being built.

One of the first things I got to do was upgrade my rocker arms. That required the use of a press and some snap ring pliers.

Tonight I should be able to get pictures of the cleaned up cylinder heads, pistons and rods, and the block. One week from tomorrow I get to order the rest of the parts I need to finish this build. Yes, I'm excited and it's hard to be patient at this point...LOL
There will be video of the CNC machine decking the block and of course first start up video. :)

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
great storyline, little miss.
the parts are rough but I've seen worse, good to get at it while it's still early.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
How many miles on that build? wondering if they didn't get all the abrasives cleaned out or ran too tight on tolerances?
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Awesome stuff.. I dig these builds :D

it had roughly 70k on the build. It most certainly was put together filthy. The crank and camshaft will become furniture. The rods and pistons will be separated and sold.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Kind of a shame that someone did such a crappy job last time .. I haven't done engine work in years, more like decades
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
I made some more progress tonight. Got the cam bearings out of the block. Started separating the rods from the pistons so they can be sold. I got the cam and crank cleaned and bagged. Like I said before, they will become furniture. Tomorrow I'm starting with honing the cylinders so that the new pistons will fit. After the honing is done I will disassemble the cylinder heads and get them prepped for porting and polishing.
Here are a few photos from today.
Cam bearings:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0dfb4b28.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2886d199.jpg
There's a chunk missing out of this one. I found the chunk during the tear down.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps56d09876.jpg
Cam journal all gouged from the previous build. Thankfully this isn't really an issue because of the location. I'll clean it up as best as I can before I install new bearings.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps26b20110.jpg
The cam and crank are ready to be turned into furniture.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Nice! Looking good so far. Makes me want to get started on my Dodge 318...which is a wimpy engine compared to your 6.0 6.2, but nevertheless a project. It all comes down to money and time doesn't it....
Good luck, not that you'll need it.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
You can make a 318 really go... I have/had one.

My math was ever so slightly off. It's going to be a 6.6L instead of a 6.2. I'm short on money. Time, I've got a bit. Then again when this project is done I've gotta go to Detroit.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
O darn, maths gives you more displacement, so more torques and HP. Well done.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
A few stock driveline parts may not like more HP and TQ, but I sure will.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Which driveline parts? Are you sure you don't want to beef up those parts too?
It sounds like you may be taking a risk by not upgrading other parts, a pay-me-now or pay-me-later situation.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
My driveshaft and axle stubs are still stock. Everything else has been beefed up. I'm not overly concerned with either at this point. I know of guys making considerably more power than I will be on stock parts. :) The next big thing is going to be a driver mod. I'm going to take some PDX classes once the car is done.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
OK, gotcha. I didn't quite catch the sarcasm. After all you have invested, it would be a major shame to have something break.
Now are your brakes up to the task? :io:

Yes, it would be a shame to have something break after all is said and done. I'd probably cry like a girl if anything happened.
Yes, they are. I'm pretty sure they are six piston up front. :) I'm running aftermarket pads and rotors.

I swear every time I set foot in the shop I enter a time warp.
So tonight I got the oil pump apart and inspected. Thankfully the new one hadn't eaten anything and it can be reused.

I got the valve covers, front and rear covers, the oil pan, and the pick up tube in the wash tonight. They are cleaning up nicely. I'm thinking about painting the valve covers and the front and rear covers. I'll decide on that tomorrow.
The valve guides were measured, and there was a little too much wear for me to feel comfortable reusing them, so out they are coming. I also took a look at the exhaust ports and I have plenty of room to work with when I start porting them.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps95dfc7cd.jpg
I just thought this was a cool shot.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pseeb6440a.jpg
The mains were torqued down and measured. There's some taper in them, but not that bad. They were also checked to see if they were level with each other. They were not, but that can be fixed.
Dykem is fun to work with, as long as you can keep from getting it all over...LOL
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps328663a6.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4f1b3131.jpg
Tomorrow I will begin cutting the main caps. I will also get all of the guides out of the heads and put them in the wash again.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Today was slightly frustrating. I started cutting the main caps and discovered that the cap grinder put .0025" of taper in the caps. Tomorrow I'll figure out how to get them right and start align honing the block.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psb8e7e01f.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5e67bcde.jpg
I also removed the rest of the valve guides from my cylinder heads. Only one was a PITA, but eventually it cooperated.

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psfbb91243.jpg
The cylinder head is just fine, which is a good thing.
I'm hoping tomorrow goes a bit smoother than today. I'd like to have the crank in the block so I can make sure I order the right length timing chain.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Lots of progress was made tonight, and I learned how to run a new machine.
I learned how to run the align bore machine tonight. It was used to fix the main cap incident from yesterday. The caps are all now within .0018" from being where I want them.
My friend (Jason) loading the bar into the block and explaining to me how to adjust the height of the bar.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5efda5f1.jpg
Getting the boring bar dialed in on the rear of the block.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psae99a33b.jpg
Doing the same with the front of the block:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps294292c3.jpg
Setting up the cutter:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2909b68e.jpg
All lined up:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse1e87f56.jpg
Here's a video of the machine doing it's job:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps37b3c059.jpg
Tomorrow I will align hone the block. Hopefully I will only need two passes (back and forth) to finish that part of the machine work. After that's done the block will get loaded into the hone and I'll start honing the block.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Tonight started with getting the block set up in the align hone machine. Unfortunately it took a few more than two passes to get the main bores where I wanted them. I ended up having to grind a couple of the caps ever so slightly.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps57fac0a6.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse84243b5.jpg
Once the mains were done, the block with into the SV-10. I love that machine.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2dec8d14.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc264372a.jpg
The shadowing shows that the cylinders are getting cleaned up and eventually measured at 4.0055".
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc48c1599.jpg
All nice and round with some nice crosshatching.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4c0031e2.jpg
Here's a vid of the SV-10 doing work, and making my life easier.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psd204b1fa.jpg
So Monday I will start cleaning the block. I will also measure to see if I need to order a shorter timing chain set. I'll also order what parts I need to finish assembling the engine.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
So glad to see this is turning out well. I can't wait to see dyno numbers!!
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
You think you've taken enough material off to need a shorter chain?
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
No, I think a regular length chain will be just fine.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Today was a bit of a tedious day. I checked the block to see if it needed to be decked, and it did not. That was kind of a bummer because I wanted to use the CNC machine...LOL After the block was checked, it went into the wash:
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps10f41daf.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps3f411bde.jpg
The block got sprayed with WD-40 after it came out of the wash and was put away for the evening.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps84a58f19.jpg
I ordered the rest of my rotating assembly today too. I'm sure the delivery person is going to hate me simply because of how much the crank weighs.
Tomorrow I will install new valve guides in the cylinder heads and wash the block by hand. I may even get started on porting the heads after the guides are installed.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
what is going to guide you with your porting? Are you doing it by hand?
-

I hope this question is answered in this post.
Tonight was another tedious but fun night. It started with me scrubbing down the block to make sure all of the dirt and debris was out of oil galleys and threads.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2c5e5dff.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psea455ee7.jpg
While I was cleaning the block, I put my cylinder heads in the wash so it would heat up. The purpose of doing that was so I could install the new valve guides easier.
I learned a very valuable lesson tonight. That is being short needing to use a workbench designed for someone over 5' 5" sucks. After deciding that I wasn't going to be able to get the right angle on the guides on the bench, to the floor they went...LOL The guides are all installed at .682"
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps77e0bd0a.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps9b6b4981.jpg
I also learned that going elbows deep in the parts washer can lead to interesting things happening to your skin.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psbb702048.jpg
Now I was elbows deep in the parts washer because I thought I lost one of my new valves. I had to clean the cosmoline (sp) off of them.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psded9b5d6.jpg
Jason and Zach thought I had lost my mind when I started laughing out of the blue. When I showed them my hands, they laughed too.
I also got the exhaust ports Dykemed and scribed for porting tonight.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5f8f510f.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psa1661ab8.jpg
Tomorrow I will get my piston rings ground and installed on the pistons. Then I'll move on to honing the valve guides so that the new valves fit.
I should also see my new bearings tomorrow. I hope my crankshaft adn rods show up by the end of the week.

Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Tonight seemed to fly by. My bearings came in this morning so my first order of business was to measure all of them and figure out what my oil clearance is going to be. Main bearing clearance will be .0020". Which is right where I want it. The photo shows my rod bearing measurements.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps1ae8cb20.jpg
The valve guides were honed and the new valves fit perfectly. Sorry I didn't get any pictures of that process. I left my camera at home, so you guys are stuck with cell phone pictures tonight...LOL
Now that the guides are done, they are resting upstairs in the cylinder head room. I may get some flow numbers tomorrow. That just depends on if I get all of my rings filed or not.
Disclaimer: That is NOT my cylinder head sitting on the flowbench.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc4854212.jpg
My crank and rods will be here Monday, so I'll get all of my reciprocating and rotating weights done and know what to shoot for when I balance the crank.
-
Re: A Different Sort of Build Thread
Tonight's goals were to get the rings gapped and start porting the heads. Well I got a pleasant surprise when I went to gap the rings. They were already gapped at .018" and .016". Thank you Robert. So all I had to do was mark the rings for the cylinders the are going in and I was done.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps3f2a702a.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps228688ff.jpg
Since that was so easy, I got the rings, pistons, wrist pins, and locks weighed.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0ac02a69.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psaedb4caa.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psd142a0a2.jpg
Now it's time for the worst part of my evening. I started porting the heads. Why was this the worst part of my evening? Two words: Flying metal. Shudders. It's amazing where little pieces of aluminum can get.
I also learned that for this process, being short is and advantage. :)
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2bf61337.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psec87d4b0.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4dfe5393.jpg
I got the roughness of the exhaust ports ground out and just barely opened the port itself. Tomorrow, I will work on smoothing the area around the guide out a bit and remove all of the marks left behind by the cutter on this head. I should have some stock vs ported flow numbers by Monday. I want to finish porting and polishing this head first and then I'll flow both (ported and stock) the same night. Once the heads are done being ported I will cut the seats for the new valves and surface the heads. I'm thinking I'll only take off .005" to clean them up. As it stands my static CR will be 11.6:1.
Monday will be exciting because my rods and crank will be here. I'll be able to get my rotating assembly balanced and start assembling the short block. If all goes well I'll have the timing chain, balancer, and gasket kit Wednesday.

LOOKING GOOD!!! That's excellent.
