lat 700

Well, I bought a tymphany lat700 about 4 months ago. The unusual design of this sub intrigued me from the first time I saw it. I came across one never powered and just had to try it. I finally found the time to screw, glue and seal the enclosure I cut out shortly after I got it......and tomorrow its going in it for a trial run laying across the back seat of my cobalt on my trusty mtx 2300. The box is 2.3 cubes, and built more for the spot it may arrive in than for the sub. The information on this thing is sparse at best, and I know this enclosure is borderline small for it, but, its what I'm working with regardless.

There's a Guy on mss and bitchma goes by cvjoint, he runs two ib and says they are great.

I'm familiar with CVJoint.

Mayhap you could share a YouTube vid of one of these things playing some low frequency material? I'd like to see some cone movement

Its got six 7" cones ranoff two motors. I have never heard one, tomorrow I will. Reports from others are they aren't very impressive.........we'll see.....unfortunately I got the reports after the purchase. I've always been curious nonetheless.

The brand I'm running had that sub for a while too... Very nice and clean output, but not very loud imo.. I like the acoustic lever setup just by the looks...

Hopefully I'll have a report before too much longer chit, ran into another snag. I thought I could unwire my current subs quite easily, wrong......I have to disassemble part of my damn amprack, grrrr! That's what I've heard woosey, that they are shy on output.......like I said before, I still wanna hear it. Oh, and al....your avatar pic is plum distractin', the more I see it the more mesmerizing it becomes!

And.......I got my first listening test in today.......required some heavy tuning to get it to cooperate. It did not like the tuning for the 2 eights. One thing for sure, unlike a lot of subs that break up and sound rough at their limits, this thing goes very smoothly into a God awful blat, that will ring yer damn ears. Output is better than I expected, considering the reports I had heard. It wont take the beating the w7's would though, that is apparent already, but output, being that they aren't loaded on the back window like the 8's, is comparable. They are definately more efficient, and don't need the power I'm feeding them.

Alright, extended tuning/listening session last night. I severely underestimated the low response of this sub, my eq was set really heavy on the bottom, the eights needed that. This being seven inch cones in a sealed box, I figured they would too.......wrong. On my initial tune (about 15 min.) I dialed things back, and had a great sound on music, but it was wicked easy to bottom them on electronic type stuff. Last night I was doing some serious tuning and wound up not only dialing out the aforementioned boost below 40hz, but actually cutting 20-40hz. I also dialed back on the power, and this thing is coming into its own. Power compression initially was holding the dynamics back some, I guess. This thing is really flat and smooth in this box, so maybe it isn't as undersized for the sub as some internet reading led me to believe. Anyway, its still early on, and I'm gonna listen more, before I comment too much......

Another thought.......I'm really starting to wonder just how underrated this mtx amp is. In the 20 years, yes 20, I've run it, it has absolutely manhandled every sub setup I've had on it. Years ago I read about several different 2300 benching at 1000+ Watts.......I always took this with a grain of salt, but I really don't know.....

I think it's safe to count on 900+ from a good working 2300

Wonder how it would work as an upfront subwoofer...

Kelvin, unless you could get creative with ib, I think the enclosure sizes would be too large......unless you just happen to need some upfront bass in a city bus........:D

Word......can't wait till after work to listen and tune some more....that amp has served me well, I keep expecting it to die.........when it does I will probably hold a service for it.....

Ok, after spending several days with the lat, I will share my impressions. Having such a creative design, I expected for this thing do have a different sound, something new, mind you, but I was wrong. The six cones work together in harmony, and I honestly couldn't hear anything origional, or strange about the sound..........just sounded like a quality sub. I ran this sub in a 2.3 cubic foot sealed enclosure, about 50% stuffed, on probably a lil under 1k Watts. It started off crossed at 63hz 24 DB......but ended up after some experimentation, at 50hz 18db. The lat blended seamlessly with my midbasses, and flat disappeared in my interior. Its sound was smooth and flat, it did not require any low end boost like most sealed setups. This came as a surprise, as every sealed setup I've ran, has required some help below 40hz........not this one. The bass had a palpable presence, definate texture......yet total lack of coloration. As I moved through my collection, I enjoyed listening to the different presentations of low frequency information, the instruments all sounding distinctly different.......for this sub is truly detailed. As you can tell I quite like the sound of this sub, but, and this is a big but.........there just isn't enough output to satisfy my low frequency requirements. I listen to my system pretty loud, pretty regular, and when pushed to concert levels, the lat would respond to dynamic bass tones with a deafening BLAT! I realize that I had more power on tap than this sub requires, so I had to remove it from the car......I was honestly worried about damaging it........for one thing that is different about this sub versus the more conventional designs I've used is the fact that it doesent give any warning at all that it is being stressed...it will be playing along beautifully at high volume, distortion free, clean as a whistle....then suddenly just run out of extension. Most subs I've ran reach a point in their usable range, where they start to sound nasty, with breakup and distortion becoming apparent before they slam into their limit. The lat will go willingly into doom, sounding beautiful the whole time. When I first got this sub, several trusted people told me the output would be lacking......well, they turned out to be right, but, I was surprised at how close it came to meeting my needs. You need to understand the levels I listen at to know the levels the sub is capable of. It will surpass the levels I've witnessed in 90% of the "sq" cars I've demoed. As a matter of a fact, it will play at about 8/10ths of the level I beat on my eights with. I know your thinking, wow, it wont keep up with a pair of sealed 8s, that's weak, but my 8w7s are quite powerful, and play clean at rediculous levels. The lat could provide tight, solid bottom end at these levels, but from track to track would require adjustments to keep them from bottoming, and I just can't rock out worrying about the safety of my subs.....its distracting. So back to the 8s I went, wondering once again why I would want to swap them for anything else anyways.........

Yup Chad, I'd have to agree.......up to 8/10ths it was great.......unfortunately I stay in those last two tenths a great deal of the time.........if I could squeeze I'm a pair of them, well that would be different. The whole reasons I was pumped to try it was the fact that it could fire through the hole I cut into my rear deck, just for the 8s. If I had to run two......it would eliminate the advantage of using said hole, and I'd probably just use standard subs........

It's always a good idea to use the hole for what it's intended for :)

I heard a pair of the 700's IB in a Civic one time at Erin's. They were decent sounding but were a little muddy sounding. Coulda just been the install and/or tune.

When and if you find yourself no longer in need of that LAT, LMK. I've been looking for a second 700.
