your best sounding system ?
What was your best sounding set-up ?
My best was LCY 108's ribbons/ 12M Scanspeak midrange / JL 8IB4's rear drs/ and a DD 12G w/ a carbon fiber cone dual 1 ohm vc's in a sealed box. Played highs , midrange , midbass and subbass the way I liked to hear it . 1991 Ford Explorer !
Re: your best sounding system ?
My best sounding? Probably the one I have now. Not because of the equipment but because I finally got the hang of tuning. Lots of previous systems had a ton of potential but didn't have a tune worth a damn on it. My current system is my best yet in my opinion and is in my 2016 single cab Ram...
Pioneer 501ex double din
Helix dsp.2
Helix G-Five (sub, mids, tweets)
Zapco ST-4X SQ (bridged to midbass)
LPG aluminum tweets
Audiofrog gb25's
Scanspeak Discovery 7's
IDQ12v4 (smooth sub that's easy to blend and does everything right BUT is an air pig so getting replaced by a Dayton ho12 that needs about 1/3 the box size for a good sealed alignment. IDQ is headed for house duty on a big plate amp eventually in a BIG ported box)
Several told me that they liked my 2014 Grand Cherokee better for overall presentation. I can agree with that since it's a MUCH better platform for a system to kick ass. The Ram does more technical stuff correctly but the Jeep had more grunt to it and was an output monster. That's what happens when you have GOOD 6x9's pulling a good amount of MIDrange duty;)If I wouldn't have had to of traded the Jeep in for unfortunate reasons I'd still be running the same system in it except a Helix dsp would have probably been in there by now. After it got rearended things just got strange and understandably because it took a HARD hit. Deep down I wanted back in a real truck anyway so it was all for the best and got the high end suv bug out of my system. The system everyone seemed to love in it was...
Factory u-connect 8.4 headunit
PAC ampro sending CLEAN analog signal to the back
Minidsp 8x12
Zapco ST-5X ii (sub, tweets, rears)
Zapco ST-4X SQ (bridged to gs690's in doors)
Audiofrog gb10, gs690, and g12
Factory rears in d-pillars firing nearly on axis towards the front dialed in correctly for l-r rearfill

Re: your best sounding system ?
Every time I do a new build, I think it's the best sounding system I've had...
With that said; the setup that really made an impact for me (probably because it was my first DSP/active system) was:
2012 Audi S4
Front 2-Way: ScanSpeak D3004/6040 tweeters & Dynaudio Esotar 650 drivers.
Rear Fill: Focal Polyglass 165-V30
Sub: JL 10TW3-D4
DSP: Mosconi 6to8
Amps: Pair of Rockford T800-4 Power Series (1 amp for front active, 1 amp for rear and bridged sub)
Of course, the system that definitely sounds the best, is my current one:
Attachment 7162
Re: your best sounding system ?
Yea I also think my next one will be my best setup. Hope to complete this in the next month or so.
So far it will be:
Helix P 6 for 3-way front
Dynaudio MD 102 tweets
Dynaudio Esotar 430's 4" Mids
Morel 10" Midbass
IDMAX 15" IB Sub
Sub Amp: Zapco 400.2 bridged to 1325 Watts 4 Ohm.
Source Android LG V40 with USB DAC
Tuned by me with a little help from Dirac :D
Re: your best sounding system ?
My current system sounded great to me, but I decided to upgrade amps for more output and to see how much difference they make, if any. So far, I’ve been reluctant to attempt my own install, but I’ve been without tunes for a couple months, so I’m going to have to go for it. Plus, I’m searching for a truck to daily drive, and I have most of the equipment to put a system in it as well, so I need to figure it out...
Re: your best sounding system ?
I'm really happy with the system currently in my truck, so much so that I finally decided to pull the trigger on going three way in my car as well. It gets better and better as I'm getting better at tuning.
Arc PS8 DSP
Phoenix Gold Ti2 1600.5 for sub, mid bass, and mids
Arc KS 125.2 for tweeters
SI TM65 MKIII
Audiofrog GB25
Audiofrog GB10
Audiofrog GB12D4
Re: your best sounding system ?
I think for me it's a toss up between two setups, but difficult to really compare since they were 15 years apart.
First one, and by far the best setup up until then, this was around 1999:
Pioneer DEX-P99R hu (euro version of the Premier DEX-P1R)
Soundstream Davinci 7-channel amp
Boston Pro 6.43 3-way components, with midbass drivers swapped for Phoenix Gold QX 8" drivers
Phoenix Gold Cyclone subwoofer
Competed a bit in IASCA, class was then called Novice 300w+ (IIRC).
Jump forwards almost 15 years, wanted to build a system to compete with... mostly as an exuse to travel and meet up with old friends. Chosen class was EMMA SQ Master OEM, meaning that interior must be kept 100% original, so all speakers behind factory grilles etc. This presented a challenge, but the car had decent stock locations. 4" on the dash and 6,5" in the lower doors. (mk3 Golf). So chose to use widebands on the dash, playing basically from 80hz and all the way up. Worked amazingly well in fact :)
Setup:
Pioneer DEX-P99RS
Sony XM2000R 2-channel amp (the 60lbs one from the 90s that took up almost the entire trunk), running a tiny set of 3" widebands only :D :D
Tangband W3-1878 3" widebands on dash, Focal Utopia 6w3 midbass in doors, 4x Focal 13ws 5" subwoofers in trunk. All Focal speakers were powered by a Focal FPS 4.160 4-channel amp
Allthough this setup had its limitations in the absolute top end, and also in output level, it did sound amazingly well. But hard to compare these setups since they were 15 years apart.
Re: your best sounding system ?
Back in 2010, Maybe not the best but one of my favorite. A 2 way system, clean and easy, Pioneer P88RS, Morel Supremo Piccolo Tw+Supremo 6 Wf, Hertz ML3000 sub.

Re: your best sounding system ?
There you are...where have you been? :p
Re: your best sounding system ?
Until now my system in previus car Alfa Romeo 147:
Pioneer P9 combo, Brax amps for front end, JBL Crown BPX for subbass,, JBL C660 GTI (two pairs of midbass, one pair of tweeters), Hybrid Audio L4SE, 2 x JBL W15 GTI subs sealed....QED, Kimber, Esoteric audio, Dietz (and some iterations with source units (Alpine CDA 7939R, Clarion HX-D1, Helix DSP,, SS and McIntosh amps)
I belive the next one that Im starting to build will be even better, and of course added/swaped some new pieces of equipment...
Re: your best sounding system ?
I almost don't want to play. So many nice systems described so far and mine is not all that. However, my favorite system was 25 years ago in a 1992 Eagle Talon.
Panasonic VZ808 (a rare head unit)
PPI FRX-322 in dash crossover (mounted in console)
PPI A300.2 x2
MB Quart Components
JL Audio 10W1 x2
It was a very simple setup that was very clean. I wasted more than a gallon of gasoline sitting in the driveway listening to my CD's. The system actually started with two PPI Pro Mos 50's and was upgraded to the 300.2's. The two 10's eventually became just one 10". There many small changes but overall that was the best sounding system I ever had.
Re: your best sounding system ?
Probably my current one.
Audiofrog GB 10, 25, 60

MiniDSP CDSP 8x12DL
Arc Audio 4150xxk (x2)
Arc RS1.0
Arc RS4.0
JL ZR800
