2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Hello again all, this build log will be far less frenetic and ideally less annoying. Decisions have already been made on equipment and some things are already in place avoiding the need to be dragged into the minutiae of detail.
Timeline goal for this setup is to be completed by the middle of the summer with the time following purely dedicated to tuning, enjoyment and the continued improvement of sound.
Currently my setup consists of:
Factory Headunit (JBL oem)
Pac Ampro integration with Toslink adapter running optical
Helix DSP Pro Mk. 2 (from Al)
Scanspeak D3004 Ring Radiator tweeters
Stereo Integrity M3 Carbon midranges
Audio Development w800 neo
KnuKonceptz 10 gauge wire throughout.
3 runs of 1/0 welding cable
Interstate AGM battery
Singer 270 alternator
Big 4 upgrade
SMD 4 port fuse block
Resonix CLD squares throughout the vehicle
and I believe that's about it for right now.
Future plans include:
Installation of MLV on the front doors along with stuffing of door cavities with plastic wrapped Roxul/Rockwool
Pulling the floor carpet up and cleaning the floor of the car followed by (Nick Adams' fantastic phrasing) "layering lasagna" to aid in the already impressive factory sound insulation.
Infinite baffle with 2 18s
Rebuilding my current false floor setup in the trunk to allow for a hinged section to access the planned....
Spare tire amp rack
Push/ pull fan system
A pair of Stinger 9000 series 2 channel RCAs to replace damaged KnuKonceptz RCAs
I'm replacing all of my amplifiers that were in my last setup (SI 200.2, Sundown Salt 4 and Zapco 150.6 SP)
Future purchases include
The aforementioned Stinger RCAs
(2) Dayton Ultimax 18s *rationale; price is ideal in the event of failure, Impressive subs for the price and I have had an opportunity to hear them multiple times in different scenarios and have always been impressed*
Ground Zero Uranium 6.200 (purchased) *rationale; slimmer profile, lighter amp, backs down the power to the tweets and mids to tame some of the harshness (hopefully) that I experienced the first time around*
Sundown Audio Salt-200.4 *rationale; works well in low voltage situations in case they arise... bridged 4 ohm power is 700 x 2 which is pretty much more than I need for the setup I'm hoping to create*
Black Hole tiles for the doors
Mesh to cover my vents in the side wall of my trunk to try and combat the flapping noise that comes from the pressure release they provide.
I made a lot of mistakes with my first install. This go round I'm hoping to learn from those and create a solid system that I can finally enjoy.
As always, the continued assistance of the members here is always welcome and needed.
Thanks for following this if you choose to.

Al told me I just missed out on meeting you at SVR last year. Looks like you are going to the NC Meet. I'm going for the first time this year. Would love to talk about your plans. See you there.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Yeah we kept orbiting around one another lol. I look forward to meeting you and talking about it as well.

Received the Ground Zero Uranium yesterday. It's as pretty in person as I hoped it would be and legitimately dwarfed by my outgoing Zapco 150.6. I'm glad about this, it's probably 10 lbs. lighter as well. I'll upload a few pics later today when I get home.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Some changes to the design planning have occurred and I decided to go with 2 15s to start to attempt to maintain some semblance of DIY with this build and lessen how much outside help I'll need. I came across a great deal for some TC Sounds TC-1000 15s that will be loaded into a trunk baffle. I'll attach pics when they actually arrive next week. With this decision that allowed me to save some money and hold on to my Stereo Integrity 200.2 which I'll run at 2 ohms for about 430 watts x 2 to power them. I want to see how that feels for a while before I make a decision about feeding them more power and pursuing a different amp (Mosconi 200.4)
My rationale: Both of the amps I've chosen to either own or pursue as well as keeping the SI is that I like the direction that the inputs are facing for a cleaner install. I'm already sourcing Stinger 9000 2 channels as well as a 2 channel set of Stinger 8000s to keep the build looking clean and hopefully aid in how it sounds.

I'm glad you responded though...I have a question...what did you use to ensure that the mlv stayed bonded together as you laid the sheets down? I haven't bought it yet, nor have I worked with it so I'm under the assumption that this does not have adhesive backing to lay it down with

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
i adhered the ccf to the mlv, but otherwise it floats

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
I've got a 2022 Avalon, but I have the basic audio system. I'm keeping track of this thread for sure. Also, who'd you get the adapter from to fit the 8" in the door?
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
ohhh lucky you....you'll (continue to) love your Avalon...I know I am loving mine.
My friend actually fabbed up the adapter for the door woofers when he was putting the system together for me....you may be able to dodge some of the headaches we faced going with the non-JBL setup.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
When you were putting the 8's in the doors, did you happen to measure how much depth there is? I'd like to put Stevens Audio MB8's in the doors if possible. Mounting depth is 3.5" for it.
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
I didn't retain the measurements when I took them a few years ago but I can tell you that you should be fine. I imagine we'll be able to put upwards of a 4.5" depth speaker in the door without too much concern. The window mechanism doesn't drop down anywhere near the speaker which is excellent

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Thanks again. I thought I'd read similar somewhere that there was around 5" of depth available, but I couldn't find where I found it...should have bookmarked it.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
No problem man....seems like we 5th(? maybe 6th) gen Avalon owners are a rare breed out here. We are heading into the unknown by being the few who are looking to modify it. It has certainly been a learning experience. I like to think that this platform has a load of potential in the right hands.
That being said, I'm curious as to what you're planning with your build beyond the Stevens drivers

I've always had an itch to use HLCD's. I'm thinking of using a pair of Stevens HLCD's and the MB8's along with a pair of Acoustic Elegance SBP15's IB. I'll probably add a component set in the rear doors since my kids will sometimes be back there. I'll have a few different tunings (plan to anyway) so I can swap back and forth depending on who's in the car. I'm still trying to fully work out how to integrate it all since I plan on keeping the factory headunit for now...but it sounds like that may be a huge headache. Initially thought I'd just use a tee harness feeding a DSP to clean up the signals and route it...sounds like there's some all pass filters and other EQ'ing going on that may take more investigation. I planned on doing something similar to what you wrote with the DAP. That way I could swap between the sources. I'll start a build log eventually...

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
As we inch closer to 2.0's install....I'm trying to figure out the ways that I can further improve upon my car until that fateful day arrives. I currently have about 65-70% coverage in my trunk and have been thinking if I should take it further.
I've been looking at buying some more CCF and MLV to fully cover the floor of my trunk and spare tire well (along with the cavities on the side)...is this a waste of my time?
I'm also trying to figure out should I add Black Hole tiles to my doors along with the CLD I already have applied or should I just go the full beans and do the Soundskins Pro tri layer deadener and try to get close to full coverage on my outer door skin and anything left over apply to my inner door skin.
Lastly, I'm curious for the folks who have done this, how much difference did you hear in your respective cars from when you did not have deadener applied to your vehicle floor vs if you did a full application from front to back?
I'm looking at about another 3 weeks of waiting..maybe less if I can work it out but in the meantime between time I'd like any insight into what I can do to aid in this sounding as well as it can sound.
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Sound deadening is never a bad idea. You have the time so the only other variable is if it works in your budget (if there is one) I've fully gutted and covered cars before to make sure there wouldn't be any unwanted resonance. In my current build I didn't do any yet, I'm going to deaden after the system is done depending on what's left in the budget.
If there aren't any constraints go for it. I never heard someone say the have too much sound deadening.
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Definitely have the time....definitely have a budget lol...I'm willing to scratch some money together if it will help. thanks for the feedback.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Lucky you. My wife may have encouraged me to build the system because of all the driving I've been doing but there were definitely strings attached.
No dictatorship in this house. I'm happy to accept any cut away scraps, I am putting a system in a recycled tin can from Thailand after all
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Lol...well it's a bit of a monarchy in my world...my only limit IS budget. If I had an unlimited budget I would be going nuts on equipment and more importantly would have either Musaic or Apicella on the build. He's well out of my price range so...I'm left tackling the planning and some of the install on my own...hence why this is version 2 lol. So. many. mistakes. the first time around. Just trying to get it right, now.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Potential update: Currently moving away from the SI amp due to not having remote sub control available with this particular amp. I have no plans to buy a director for the Helix either so I'm in the process of trying to sell the SI as well as the Sundown to try and fund the purchase of a Mosconi Zero 1 or Zero 3 if I can find one from a trusted seller.
This holiday weekend I plan to do more deadening in my doors and the build is tentatively scheduled for about 3 weeks from now so it's trending towards being ready for the drive to SVR the following weekend and to Naiku's meet in September.
Wish me luck. If you know any reputable Mosconi resellers or anything like that let me know.

Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
you figure out if the driver's blown?
-
Re: 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited v.2
Yeah, luckily it was not blown. It's something else going on...can't figure out exactly what...I'm hoping it was something in one of the amps I removed and it has self corrected. I won't know until I hook up all of this new stuff and see if it persists....if that's the case then we are back to working from the source point back to the DSP. Let's hope it's nothing crazy.

Posting 2 pics of the nearly finished product...needs some TLC and a lot of seat time for tuning but here you go
Attachment 17620Attachment 17621
Looks great. Sounds like dog s*it.
I have a lot of work to do to get the sound right and finish up the rest of the build (Still need to fill in the sides to better isolate the waves) it's hard to tell from the pic but it's not completely done. Also have to clean up the wiring underneath which isn't my strong suit but I"m going to give it my best shot this weekend in the morning. My friend and I attacked this in oppressive east coast heat for a combined 22 hours of non stop work...pure madness on our parts and I've likely lost years off of my life from doing this. I spent all of yesterday recovering and still don't feel "right"....hope to make it worth it in the end.
If anyone in the DMV area is willing to give me a hand with the last piece of things or offer pointers as well as walk me through tuning and some questions I have I would appreciate it beyond measure. I really want this to work and feel like I'm very close to achieving what I'm chasing.
Thanks for following this guys, I'll take a few more pics as I continue to get things sorted out.
