To my mind, power implies sinister intent until/unless substantially proven otherwise on an ongoing and case by case basis.

Sweden, the only country that didn’t run with the herd. Keep a close eye on them. https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/...economic-ruin/
Let’s see who is right. Sweden or the rest of the world. My money is on Sweden. Read this with an open mind. https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/...economic-ruin/
“The really good news is that in Sweden’s ICU census, which is updated every 30 minutes nationwide, admissions to every ICU in the country are flat or declining, and they have been for a week. As of this writing (based on currently available data), most of Sweden’s ICU cases today are elderly, and 77 percent have underlying conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, kidney disease, and diabetes. Moreover, there hasn’t been a single pediatric ICU case or death in Sweden — so much for the benefits of shutting down schools everywhere else. There are only 25 COVID-19 ICU admissions among all Swedes under the age of 30.”
“Sweden is developing herd immunity by refusing to panic. By not requiring social isolation, Sweden’s young people spread the virus, mostly asymptomatically, as is supposed to happen in a normal flu season. They will generate protective antibodies that make it harder and harder for the Wuhan virus to reach and infect the frail and elderly who have serious underlying conditions. For perspective, the current COVID-19 death rate in Sweden (40 deaths per million of population) is substantially lower than the Swedish death rate in a normal flu season (in 2018, for instance, about 80 per million of population).”
And this
“Nature’s got this one, folks. We’ve been coping with new viruses for untold generations. The best way is to allow the young and healthy — those for whom the virus is rarely fatal — to develop antibodies and herd immunity to protect the frail and sick. As time passes, it will become clearer that social-isolation measures like those in Switzerland and Norway accomplish very little in terms of reducing fatalities or disease, though they crater local and national economies — increasing misery, pain, death, and disease from other causes as people’s lives are upended and futures are destroyed.”
Yes, we'll see indeed...
Sweden is our neighboring country (I'm in Norway), as so far the death rate is 4x higher in Sweden than in Norway 89 vs 24 per million. About 8x as many dead in total, but then their population is close to double, so about 4x as high per capita. Both demographic and geography is near identical between the countries.
The article somehow forgot to mention that ICU admissions in Norway also have been declining for the last week, and at a higher rate than in Sweden. But that would ruin the point they are trying to make..?
But in any case, the real outcome is months away before any conclusions can be made.
Haakono, looks like Sweden is still on the uprise and Norway is flattening out consistent with the models showing the flattening of the curve. If the theory or assumptions are correct then Sweden will peak sooner and recover much faster than Norway or other similar countries doing the same thing. Consistent with the theory, Sweden should not experience a second wave assuming Norway and other countries do not reach herd immunity due to extreme social lockdown. The unfortunate consequence of flattening the curve through social distancing could be these countries may experience a much longer run with the virus and overall deaths could be about the same. The only thing that will change that would be a vaccine or miracle drug that reduces the amount of deaths.
Damn... I never thought about the farmers during all this... So fucking sad. I hope many of us have the balls to stand up and sue the governments - local, state and federal - for the horrific mess they have made of ALL of our lives.

When I see the term extreme social lockdown being used, it's fair to explain the actual situation over here.
First covid-19 related death here was on the 12th of March. The very next day the following actions were made:
- Closing of schools (and preschool/kindergartens)
- Closing of following businesses: Hair salons, tattoo/piercing studios, fitness gyms, etc. Meaning places with close body contact generally.
- Closing of bars/night clubs etc.
- All other businesses remain open at will, only restriction is that locations serving food cannot do it in the form of buffet. Cafes/Restaurants can be open as long as they follow guidelines of distance between customers. Although takeout is recommended.
- sports and cultural events, both indoor and outdoor are cancelled.
- working from home is encouraged for those who can, for those who can't there should be 6 feet distance between workers indoors.
- Public transportation remain open and running, but with fewer available seats so that everyone can sit at least 3 feet from the next passenger.
Rules of isolation/quarantine:
- People diagnosed with Covid-19 shall remain in full isolation, this means NOT leaving the house for any reason, and preferably stay in separate rooms from others in the household. Remain in isolation for one week after becoming non-symptomatic.
- home quarantine: People having had contact with anyone diagnosed with Covid-19, but are non-symptomatic themselves, is to remain in home quarantine. Difference between isolation and quarantine is that you can: go outside as long as you keep distance to others, You cannot: Use public transportation, go to work outside the home, go to public places (stores, pharmacies, restaurants etc), but you're allowed to shop for essentials if you don't have any that can do it for you. But then keep distance and avoid queues. Quarantine rules also applies to all that are coming home from abroad. 14 days of quarantine.
For all the rest: adviced to stay at home as much as possible, no more than 5 people gathered when outdoors (keep 1m distance). Exception for families with more than 5 people, they can go together outdoors.

As the goverment said, these are the most intrusive rules ever set in peacetime here in Norway. And although they are extreme compared to the norm, they are pretty liveable compared to lockdown rules that have been imposed where the virus had gotten really out of hand before measures were taken.
Also, these strict rules are being softened up shortly, some year levels of school will reopen later this month, same with the businesses that were ordered closed (hair salons etc). Since the reports now indicate the the spread is under control (meaning less than 1 new infected by each one that is infected, reports now say 0.8-0.9), the rules can be softened up.
In any case, I do believe that taking firm action quickly has been beneficial. Then you can (to a greater extent) nip it in the bud, instead of having to go to more extreme measures to try to contain something that has gotten wildly out of hand because of early inaction.
Why is everybody picking on Bill Gates all of a sudden? Best I can tell he's given billions of his own money to combat disease in the world. Must be a fox news thing.

I don't watch Fox at all... But you must be right, he's just a good Samaritan and I am an asshole for being suspicious of his motives. The lust for power and wealth never corrupts anyone, and he made his fortune via the kindness of his heart.
On that note, it must be an MSNBC thing to defend him if anyone dares criticize him... ;)
