The last few times, I have taken a piece of cardboard, wrapped a piece of a shop towel around it, and wedged it between the surround and screw... But I have also mainly been using allen head screws and tightening them by hand.
This issue is one of the reasons I think it is so stupid when sub mfgs have surrounds so close or nearly on top of the screw holes, with no protection (hhhhmmm, SI, hmmm)! They need to take a close look at two things that AudioFrog does SOOOOOO right with their GB design: screw holes are towards the outer edge, which leaves more wood to grab onto, and there is rubber that protects the surround.
