Sexual intercorsa...

Another week off so a few pics will appear here! For now I’ve just taken delivery of some nice carbon cone satori mw13tx drivers… they were in and fitted half an hr after the fed ex guy dropped them off! :)

And sound cleaner in the upper midrange than the mw13p or the mr13p, a very nice upgrade! And very sexy looking drivers!

So… a little disappointment… the 17cm midbass just aren’t going to fit in the kicks and sit nicely… so… an experiment was undertaken with a hybrid 6” subwoofer in a long thin enclosure… and wedged it well and truly into the passenger side kick panel

rhe result was the following nearfield and listening position measurements

So as you can see, I cut a 102mm hole and also a 64mm hole and joined them up with a jigsaw

the entire area was deadened some more (I didn’t do the bulkhead as it had inch thick foam and mlv on it) the bulkhead was stripped of the foam and mlv and then a single layer applied, I then cut pieces of wood to approximate the flat areas and fitted four rivnuts to take M5 bolts with repair washers into areas that were chassis rails where possible

i then cut sections of wood to fill in the other areas…

I then smeared the fibreglass on the first piece and then pressed it into place. Using the fibrefiller like cement with bricks, it’s something I’ve done since the 90’s with ‘bricks’ instead of fibreglassing with resin and mat

i then smeared the glass squished up the gaps and effectively encased the wood in glass fibre reinforcement

repeat for all the other pieces

you end up with a very close fitting shape that’s incredibly strong once assembled

I then cut a piece of 18mm birch ply for the top, and used a couple of braces to ensure it stayed where it should

i also cut a further piece of 18mm with the sub cutout and inserted M4 t-nuts to fit with the Emma rules, I will also make and fashion a grill… again to meet Emma rules and to stop the peerless sls 8” getting damaged which is a perfect candidate for an upfront sub… pics to follow as it was last off when I attached it to the framework I’d created… screws will be added where possible to ensure it’s as strong as it can be!

So I finished the peerless sls 8” sub box… it was good, flat from 60 down pretty much… it didn’t have the impact the satori did though…

So it was rude not to try something… it’s not like I’m short of 9.5” satori drivers

so the enclosure was removed, carpet removed and then a new front fashioned

the result is a far better sound, the peerless are a cheap driver, high inductance around 0.8, sits an eight ohm driver so it’s inductance will be twice a four ohm driver, but the satori is a 0.17 Mh driver, so apples to apples more than half the inductance of the peerless

The satori was measured with dats before fitting in free air, the qts sits at 0.44 and fs around the upper twentys

and then I measured it in situ in the front of the car and the fs dropped which I don’t really understand, and it also showed a slight resonance at 270ish hz

but once tuned and crossed over at 165 the result was good, I’ve ordered a third wo24p now for those I want lots of midbass days for dance music 😎

I also did a tune with front sub alone with some eq, it took a shelf filter from 40hz down, but it does it… however the rear subs in the mix definitely performed better for me

Do you only have one of these in the pass foot-well? If so do you not need any additional midbass speakers?

I currently have underseat mid-bass/subs, but may consider something like this for midbass duty (50-200) or so?

Thanks, very nice!

I have two underseats and one in the footwell, I actually played them all together on Sunday for the uk finals, 200hz is too high a crossover for me and you start to lose the panning and stereo effect above 170ish

If levels were enough with one it’s very possible to use a single driver and have great midbass

Well I went to the uk finals and came second to the car I had thought would beat me all season… well done team platinum in car and pritesh! I spent time sorting a few other cars and neglected tuning my front sub setup somewhat, since I have tuned it a little and it’s now far better…

but still stuff to try to improve the little corsa… kick panels this weekend and then maybe a single 18 for the boot and a new sub amp to match the pro 4/10’s

Next target the Euros?

So todays mission was to see what additional midbass locations could do for me, first try was the drivers door with an sb acoustics sb15cac ceramic, the response was pretty decent… a lovely reflection induced dip in the middle of the pass band, however it did play high enough to meet a smaller midrange, however I felt it pulled down a little bit, tbh my current mid on the pillar plays nicer to the front midbass… tomorrow I test the front midbass with an aperiodic membrane to increase the Q a little bit… mesh and fibreglass here we come :D

So kick panels are in progress, front sub is competent over 100hz, so I don’t need massive midbass drivers so the textreme are going to be pulling midbass duty’s in the kicks, playing up to a set of smaller midrange in the near future… I have a set of scan 10f to go with the bliesma beryllium

im also looking at a pro 1/10 for the subs with a view to swapping the two 15’s for a single 18 (brand tba… it’s new and has great promise) and doing an Emma tune for lower levels and also a higher crossover point for the party time efforts with a higher crossover

basically 3 way front end plus front midbass/sub, plus underseats for hammer time and excitable volumes

just adjusting crossovers a little to ease stress on the drivers when the wick gets turned up!

I have to say, I love that you use drivers that I've been looking at quite often. I've been curious about those Textreme woofers. Looking forward to hearing what you think of them when the kicks are finished.

I have 16cm textreme coming next week which will then go in the kicks as they should just fit I think now I got the baby’s in

and also have another arrival :) :) :)
