Notloudenuf’s Deck rebuild and Expansion

I love building stuff. I’m probably not the best at anything but I will study all of the right things and bother all of the right people until I figure out the best way to accomplish something.
Our house had a deck. It was 8x12, it had built in benches on the side, and it was all treated wood. With the way our house is facing the deck is on the north side so it was at least ½ in the shade almost all day. When it was being used for summer time there was 40” of light hitting the deck. Not much good if you wanted to sunbathe.
So I started researching last summer and came up with a plan.
Here are some pictures.
The design:

The existing deck:

I salvaged a brick pillar that was used in the corner near the house. I used it as a support for the first part of the addition.

The first part of the new frame

Here are the posts to hold up the drop beam for the second part of the new frame. 6x6 treated posts 24” in the ground.

Here’s my Dad helping me install the drop beam. If I wasn’t working by myself he has been my other labor. Thanks Dad.

The second part of the frame almost completed.

You’ll notice in the design, the deck has a slight arc to the front. The above picture was the first attempt at that. It did not work out. So I did a bit more measuring in AutoCAD and found the correct lengths of the joists to make the arc look right.

During that time the Trex decking that I wanted went on sale. So a big chunk of change and a trailer trip to Lowe’s I had this.

Painted the tops of the joists so they won’t show through the decking boards. You'll also notice the important part of deck building. The flashing up against the house so the sill doesn't rot out.

Finally the installation of the Trex began. I am using the hidden fastener technique and it is well worth the cost and aggravation.

Trying to work by yourself I tend to make a mess.

All decking down and posts for railing are in place.

The decking cut to match the arc

That is where it stands currently. I have the remainder of the railing and balusters on order. They won’t be here until the 22nd of June. Stay tuned for more updates later.

Love the new deck kendal. Looks fookin awesome, money and time well spent! The curve on the edge looks all professional and shit......

Got a bit more done today. A friend of mine and my neighbor came over and helped me put up the very heavy outside trim boards. Also got the tall post sleeves on as well.

thought about going with the synthetic stuff on my pool deck... the pool water just eats the wood up.

Been getting some more done in the evenings as time allows. Spent a few hours yesterday and tonight putting up the railings. It was 95 these past 2 days so a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening is all I'm going to sweat through.

In all my build logs I've never been able to post an equipment picture :D So here's one.

That's all the railing up. I need to attach the stairs and put those railings up so I can start the lighting.

For the tall posts I'm going to put up some valances so I can put up some privacy screens.

Had 2 bales in the civic once... While going 70 MPH down the road my kid rolled the window down.

And that's all I'm gonna say 'bout that.
