HDP vs. HDPE

Are High Density Plastic and High Density Polyethylene interchangeable? I'm referring to them being used as speaker spacer rings for door mounted mids. I have never seen nor used either one, just that there is a huge price difference. Is this a better material than MDF for spacers in doors. Sorry if this is an elementary question. Thanks for any info!

HDPE is the only plastic I have used for speaker rings. I'm not sure if the high density plastic is the same thing or not. The HDPE should last indefinitely in a car door, where MDF would need to be coated with something (like fiberglass resin). It won't last forever, but should last until you decide to change your speakers the next time.

Go to Wally World and get some white cutting boards. Like $10-12 for a piece big enough to do two 6.5's or 8's.

I will never use wood products in a door again. I haven't used mdf at all in years.

HDPE is polyethylene. Which is plastic. So they could be the same thing.

Yep. $30 in materials from Target or Wally World and an afternoon of making a mess with plastic shavings :)

If I remember correctly these are about 1/4" thick. Just need to glue, screw, and stack them:

Did you glue them together.

Glued and screwed with short drywall screws. I wasn't sure if the glue would hold. As it turns out the glue was fine. It chemically bonded the rings together. Now if I could only remember what glue???

I have used cutting boards (HDPE) as a baffle by just attaching it to the door sheet metal using short wafer-head screws, covering the area near the driver. The 3/8” thick panels will conform to slightly curved surfaces without forming.

There was a study that I had read about where someone had tested a multitude of different materials for use as a baffle, and HDPE stood out as the winner. I can see how it would have a deadening effect.
