2018 Chevy Silverado Z-71 by Audio-X

So...my baby is back home, and she sounds GOOOD!

First of all...the bad: The Morel CAW214's didn't make it, Steve says he just barely turned it up and it went POOF, so he replaced it with the car audio version, the CCW254. He started tuning on the system today, and one of the new ones gave up the ghost. Rather than try them a 3rd time, we decided to use Audible Physics RAM's instead.

Out with the old:

The Mosconis need some cleaning up, the aluminum housing had some discoloration, but the maps work fine.

I need some good pics out in the sun. This is lit by a droplight

Overall, I'm thrilled with it. The imaging is great, plenty of low end, and volume overall. After everything breaks in, I'll adjust the tonality, a few things are a bit harsh on some songs, but that will come in time.

Thanks Steve!

That's crazy how two Morel midranges popped back to back on him. First I've heard of the ccwr254 doing that. Those Ram 2's are better speakers anyway since I've run both. Glad to see your truck is back home and you're happy with it.

That's worrisome about the Morels. I'm using them and like them but only have about 60 watts on them but was planning on upping the power.

Love the install though Al! AudioX has done another great job.

I'm not going to say that I'm 100% sure it's not some other problem, but after talking with several people, I find they have tiny voice coils and windings which can't handle big power. The fact that the AP's are doing fine makes me think it's a driver issue, though.

In my box of miscellaneous shit, I found a miniUSB to USB A cable, so hooked up to the USB HEC to my iPhone via the camera adapter. To my surprise (and complete delight), the radio still controls the track up/down, but the HDC3 controls volume and sub. I can change tracks with the steering wheel controls, but not volume...and the "now playing" info and album art displays on the headunit. I can only assume the radio is controlling and communicating with the phone via bluetooth. The only drawback with going directly digital to the Helix is I can't use the phone because the audio part is bypassing the radio, so it will be great for demos and critical listening, but not practical for everyday use.

This was my biggest issue. But I rarely drive the truck. Maybe on the weekends for an hour or so. So going straight into the dsp completely bypassing the oem headunit is fine for me

Yeah that was one of my worries about those Morel mids. Yeah they sound good but they can only take so much. The petite booty on them didn't leave me feeling confident about them having good power handling. I only had 80rms going to each one when I tested the set Nasty sent me and had to be careful. They sound great with lower power. Those Ram 2's seem to be pretty robust from what I remember so should be good to go for a really long time.

Glad you have the truck back Al and that you are happy with the sound. The install is fantastic and I'm looking forward to checking it out soon!

Did the speakers pop in the same position? Like the first time it was the passenger side and then when replaced the passenger side popped again?
That "could" point to some installation issue OR a problem with that amp channel. Just curious....

Pretty great timing to get it back just before your meet this weekend! Wish I could have made it down, hopefully will get a demo at Jason's in NC next spring.

I went to JasonInAugusta's meet and tried out competing for the very first time and scored a 74.5. I was going against Jeff Arkema's Silverado, who ended up being the points leader for the whole day (81-82 points, but I don't remember specifically)

I've never competed before AL so I cant offer any help there but I'm going to guess with a little bit of tuning focused on the noted deficiencies in that report that you could get to the next level (albeit subjective level) that will rival or beat your competition. BTW I like a hot bass response too.

New toy!
