Re: John Henry - 1988 Chevrolet Astro - 1999 AS&S
The rumor about this van was they electrified the mic port passing through the side window causing the off the charts spl reading.
I had heard that the score came up on the screen milliseconds before the vehicle was ever 'burped'.

Measurement mics are condenser mics, they require phantom power or a bias voltage to operate... They are all "electrified"

I also heard the rumors about feeding voltage spikes into the mic port. I also heard that another competitor showed the judges and ruined a mic in the process. Not sure if either is true. When it comes to the competition scene, the late 90's was full of controversy. The SPL numbers seemed to get impossibly high, the amps in SPL seemed to get ridiculously low power ratings, some competitors showed equipment that wasn't in use to get higher SQ scores, etc. It all led to competitors becoming jaded about competing and I was one of them.
