Thread: '86 El Camino Build

    '86 El Camino Build

I had been looking for a truck for a while and came across this a few weeks ago on Craigslist. Got it from the family of the original owner that recently passed. The cassette player and 3.5" dash speakers weren't cutting it so I decided an upgrade is in order.

First on the list was air springs so I can actually use it as a truck

    Then came the new HU

Next was getting the horns mounted.
    Passenger side

Drivers side could have gone a couple inches to the left but I didn't want to relocate the parking brake and hood release.

Haven't completely decided on mids yet but leaning towards the 2118's for now.

    Getting the kicks started

That's as far as I've gotten so far. I'll be going 2 way for now until I work up the motivation to make some enclosures for the doors for either some 10" or shallow 12" midbass. I took some measurements and figure I can get about a .75ft^3 enclosure in each door. Haven't decided on subs or amps yet either but leaning towards a pair of JBL 1200GTi's for the subs.

Absolutely not, I'm already mad I had to drill 2 holes in the under side of the dash to mount the drivers side horn and that is the only drilling or cutting on the car I'll be doing. Nothing will be done that can't be put back to stock if needed. Besides, there's enough room behind the seat to fit one of these in a 5-6' enclosure.

There's also enough depth for these if I wanted too.

It has the 305 with a whopping 150hp. Not sure why they even offered a v8, the extra 20hp over the v6 probably just about makes up for the weight difference between the two. The 2.56 gears in back aren't doing me any favors either. Pretty sure it's the slowest car I've ever owned.
