Jordan's new 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis - "Marj"

I picked up this ugly rusty beater... for $700. It needs a lot - new paint, troubleshoot a random misfire, bead broken after tire went flat, and in desperate need of a cleaning. Considering the price of the vehicle, I'm not sure how much audio is gonna go into it. This place has become my favorite forum and I like documenting things here.

    Misfire:

Started off with a miss on cyl. 4 and code indicating miss within first 1000 revolutions (P0316) - swapped ignition coil from 4 to 3 and miss code hasn't returned. Then #8 developed a miss - swapped to 7 and code followed. Replaced this coil and now get a new code - P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction. Also now throws a random misfire, miss in #1, and all the while, P0316 has persisted. Cleaned the MAF, checked fuel pressure. PO claims to have changed the spark plugs and intake manifold so he may not have gapped the plugs properly or used the proper gasket for the intake manifold. Next steps are to replace all coils and plugs, then check for vacuum leaks.

    Paint:

Yeah, it's ugly as sin. I have no idea how the paint got to this point. Plan is to get out the pressure washer and get off as much loose paint as I can. From there, sand it all down (particularly the edges of the paint), then use a buddy's paint gun and Rustoleum for a low budget paint job. I'm not expecting anywhere close to perfection and want to keep it near the $100 price point.

Well, new home purchased and moved in! Marj is on the chopping block. Did a decent bit of teardown yesterday - documented in this video:

    1. Nobody puts an aftermarket intake on an 04 Merc land yacht...(it would be branded if it were a/m)
    2. moving that fast, you should be done in no time

It is an aftermarket manifold, actually - Dorman to be specific. The stock ones tend to leak bad and cause misfires, which is why I tore it apart.

Got the spark plugs out today - they appear to be pretty new, so PO did not lie about the maintenance he did. However, they're shitty low-end copper Autolites. Time to get some platinum Motorcrafts.

    Copper plugs in an F1 . . . ?
Platinum for high-revving racing engines ... this isn't a grocery getter that 90 mph is as fast as it will ever see ?

105 octane is what you use "always" , what's compression ratio ?

The 4.6 in the panther is pretty picky about spark plugs. Platinum Motorcrafts run best in these.\

It really depends on the engine HIC. My caddy demanded Platinums you run anything less and she would knock and run rough. The Magnum only wants copper for the Hemi, you do platinum and you loose mpg and power.
