Thread: How bad could they be?

    How bad could they be?

I'm getting to a point in my build where I have to decide on amps so I know how much space I need for them so I can finish my enclosure. I need something that does >1000w at 8ohm, the more the better. I have an area up to about 20"x20" to work with and all of the amps I've found that will do that much are too long. I have plenty of depth and can stack the amps if I need to so I've been looking at smaller amps that can be strapped. In my search I've come across these and while I know they're overrated, I'm wondering just by how much. If they only make 40% of their rated power that's still 1200w and I can get 2 for <$240 but I'd hate to waste the money if they can't even manage that.

There's also the Zapco ST amps

    or

    Or the Phoenix Gold
    https://phoenixgold.com/catalog/amplifiers/sx2-12001

Ideally, I'd like to spend as little as possible but am willing to spend more if necessary. I like the PA because they're the cheapest option by quite a bit. I only really like the Zapco amps because they're small and I trust them to do close to rated power. I like the Phoenix Gold because I know a dealer and could probably get them for a similar price to the Zapco amps and if I went with them I could sell one of my Arc 1200.6 to buy a SX2 1200.6 and probably come out a few $ ahead and have matching amps. So my question is can I get away with being cheap or do I just bite the bullet and buy something with a decent reputation? Are there any other options I've missed?

I would either go with the Zapco, or try one of these SS Rubicons

I like the side-mounted controls and hook-ups, especially for size-constrained spots.

I had forgotten about those. Having all the connections on one side was another reason I liked the PG amps but my friend also sells SS so I could likely get a good price on those too.

What is the rest of your system? But, if you ideally want to keep the cost down as much as possible, just keep and use the Arc XDi1200.6 amps you have (how many of these do you have?). You bridge those two sub channels and you get 600 watts. The amp does rated plus. Besides, most of the music you listen to comes from the front stage, not the sub. And, you're getting 150 watts per channel for your mids and highs (if going active). That Arc amp is a high-end amp. You'd be downgrading (from what you are looking at) if you switched out from the Arc.

I kinda agree ^^^ Are you needing max power at 8 ohms, or is it 4 ohms each? Wondering if a big four channel would work for you.
    Are you not entertained?!?!

I may have misunderstood, but he appears to want at least 1000 watts @ 8 ohms in a small amp or two of em that can be strapped.

Euphonic is on it ! A Jacobs Accuvolt and a HV Linear Power amp, maybe ?

    It's for a JBL 2269h with a single 8ohm coil.
