I think the port will displace more than that if it's entirely inside the enclosure.

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

OK, so I have been measuring and using various calculators etc. Before I start cutting anything I want to make sure I am not going to f*ck anything up (although let's be honest, that will still most likely happen). I decided to try the calculator out here http://reaudio.com/info/RE_box_calculator.php

    Entering the following measurements:
    Box Width 24"
    Box Height 7.75"
    Box Top Depth 14.5"
    Box Bottom Depth 18"
Wood Thickness 0.75" (using 0.5" only gains me a small amount of extra volume, which may then be negated if I had to add any bracing)
    Square Port Width 1.5"
    Square Port Length 2 15"

Gives me an enclosure volume after displacement of 1.014cu ft, box tuned to 26Hz. So far so good, do these cut measurements it spits out make sense?

    Box Bottom Plate 24 x 18
    Box Top Plate 24 x 14.5
    Box Left Plate 17.25 x 6.25 x 13.75 x 7.1632743909472
    Box Right Plate 16.5 x 6.25 x 13 x 7.1632743909472
Box Back Plate 24 x 6.25 - actually my front plate
    Box Front Plate 21.75 x 7.1632743909472
    Port L1 15 x 6.25 x 11.5 x 7.1632743909472
    Port L2 15 x 6.25
    Cut Angle 60.751173663453

If everything seems OK so far, then my only real question left is am I OK to cut the slot port opening in the bottom at a size of 1.5" wide x 15" long? Sorry, some potentially dumb questions. I am concerned that I am going to screw up this enclosure and it will sound a heap worse than my little 0.6cf sealed enclosure the sub is currently sitting in.

Good question, might be a typo on my end. Will double check tomorrow and update.

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

It's not a typo, it's how the program figured it. My question: Is the woofer firing down and the port firing backwards?

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

I want to have both the woofer and port firing down. On that link above I could not tell where the cut out for the port would be located or how big to cut the opening.

I am not even sure why the dimensions are 0.75" shorter on the right side. Assuming it has something to do with the side pieces and or the port opening.

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

Ok, the measurements you posted are for the woofer facing down and the port facing backwards. Using the RE calculator, this is a squared off version of what you are asking for:

    Box Width 24"
    Box Height 18"
    Box Top Depth 7.75"
    Box Bottom Depth 7.75"
    Wood Thickness 0.75"
    Square Port Width 0.5"
    Square Port Length 2 16"

The port opening is probably on the small side and the length might interfere with the depth of the woofer. This is just more of a visual reference to the port and woofer being on the same face using that calculator.

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

Thanks, so using the measurements I posted if I wanted the port facing down, then the port "wall" would have to come up and across what would be the top of the enclosure. Which is where it might interfere with the woofer depth. It's a 5" deep sub, so I suspect it is going to interfere.... 6.25" internal height - 5" woofer - 0.5" port thickness - 0.75" port wall thickness = 0

Or, could I have it the wall run along the bottom and back of the enclosure and simply cut a smaller slot? I suspect the answer to that is no.

Damn ported enclosure. If anyone is willing to help me design an enclosure I would appreciate it and will Paypal some funds over for a 6 pack. I am hoping to build this next Saturday so don't want to screw something up, but having difficulty making sure I have all the measurements (specifically for the port) correct. I have all the woofer specs and size constraints of the enclosure. Just need to make sure I don't balls up the port somehow, both port and woofer will be down firing in a wedge shaped box with the wedge piece flush against the seat back.

    Re: Ported Enclosure Help

Finally got around to building this last weekend, here is the result...

The top image is what is visible, the sub and port fire down into a 2" deep void beneath the floor that then opens out to about 34" x 40". This past weekend I got done rebuilding the trunk floor, now I just need to move my amp and possibly DSP before I can wire this up. Can't wait to get it dialed in though, the end volume was 0.86cf tuned to 36Hz.

That looks great Ian. I'm ready to check it out in April.
