I've owned three rottweilers now, they are certainly not easy in their youth as they can be stubborn, combined with a high intelligence that=frustrating. Not for a first-time dog-owner. But in late adolescence and throughout the rest of their life they are fiercely loyal and will do ANYTHING to make you happy and protect you. Never had an issue around kids either, very nanny-ish and will look after the kid to the point of diving underneath them to break their fall.

They also need room to run and "work" they are bred as a cattle herding dog and need that release.

none of the above. Any "pure bred" dog is going to have problems. Generally speaking, the "best" dog is going to be a mutt. Also, you have to choose a breed/personality to match your "family". There isnt any one "best" breed, just like there isnt any one best audio brand.

    Re: Best dogs

Meh, there's an argument to be made for both sides of that coin. Pure bred done right is specifically to ensure you're breeding the finest examples with the least chances of typical health concerns inherent to specific breeds. Some breeds have totally different tendencies and personalities than others and some have different needs in order to be a good member of the family. While a mutt may (sometimes) have less of a specific risk of a certain issue than one that may be very common in a specific pure breed, you also have less chance of predicting how the dog will interact and what their tendencies may be.
We've owned dogs (many times multiples at the same time) over many years of my life. I can say that there are some breeds that are an absolute breeze, some that require very little of their owners time to make them happy and some which are far more needy and in different ways. It really all depends on your lifestyle, what type of companion you're looking for and the family you have (kids, age, etc). Our Golden Retriever has been absolutely amazing and is a tremendously sweet dog with a loving personality. She is a pure bred and we wanted that, and selected our breeder carefully to ensure that they were breeding healthy dogs with the proper certifications and the right temperament.

Purebred pitbulls are something to behold, $600.00 for a pup. Stony was a magnificent looking dog, 65 pounds of fun, his toy was a tree branch that weighed 15 pounds, that he could actually attempt to catch on the fly, the toy hit his mouth and he hit the ground. He had to be put to sleep, was sleeping on a football player who startled Stony in his sleep and the dog snapped the guys nose off.

Indeed, and with those come the ingrained trait behaviors- instincts. Our Aussies have never been in a situation to be taught the herding instinct- but they both herd as a general rule when the situation arises.

Hence I'd never own one even though I've been around dozens of great pits- instinct is a mother fucker as stated above. Somewhat supported by Chad's comment about the Rotties needing their instinctual outlet as well.....

Pits weren't originally bred as a fighting breed, but too many bastards have inbred them away from the original breed standard for "aggressive" instinctual behavior that the breed need a full revamp (like the Doberman got) in order to overcome that....
