Thread: Great DIY MTM bookshelf option. Overnight Sensation MTM

I really like them a lot, but I haven't been auditioning critical listening bookshelf monitors in so long it's hard for me to say. They BLEW away the Orb Audio Mod2x set I thought was going to be "magic" based on reviews. Efficiency is great- they can get LOUD. I've paired them with a CHEAP 8" powered sub for the moment to give them the depth they need and it works quite well. It can get a bit muddy, but I don't expect much from it. I will probably build my own powered subs when I 'get a chance'

That'd be a fun project. Maybe a couple tight 12's would really blend well. Ah heck. Maybe a slick transmission line.

imma try these Type R 8" in some diy cabinets hidden somehow in the future. The plate amps are the issue from a $$ perspective- I need to keep my eye out for sales. Would be fun to have one each side and the big HSU sub in the back corner of the room.

Could do a coffee table down firing as well. Could line up both 8's and run them off the same plate amp. Nice and stealthy. Could even port that puppy.

coffee table is out- that's where the dogs wrestle. Ha! I'd love to go L/R in the front and a big single mono in the rear; hence the dbl plate amps. I could rebuild the current one (subwoofer), but the amp is buzzy due to how cheap the whole thing is. Probably should look into the used market for a nice two channel amp and build them out as passive subs.

Makes me wonder just how doggone good those MTM's are if compared to some typical name-brand stuff. They're silly inexpensive.

Surely they couldn't be a B&W 805 contender, but ya know.. I dunno. I read somewhere they compared favorably to a pair of Vienna Acoustic Haydn's, of course now I can't find it to save my life.

I can tell you I've heard the Vienna Haydn's.. Probably in the top 5 small "small" speakers I've heard. If these are anywhere remotely near that good for what you'd have in them, I gotta build a pair. It's imperative.

Ah cool. Will be a topic I'll have to set a reminder to bring up at the meet.

I am looking at building something using this similar setup, but building a Bipole setup. I currently have Swan Diva 6.1s for my fronts and the Diva C3 for a center. Just need a rear surround, and figured why not build since HIVI no longer makes the Diva line. Here is a gentleman that has done a bipole so I will be modeling it off this.
