What are all of you guys using as far as car alarms to protect your investment?
Apparently, no one is using alarm systems...maybe razor blades behind the head unit like in the old school daze!!!
I can't remember that last time I installed an alarm. Nowadays, cars have fairly decent protection from the factory...and as you get older, you can afford better insurance
A loaded handgun
I'm using a Viper 3305v with a battery back up, glass breakage sensor, and a second siren (pain generator) mounted under the dash. Full disclosure, I only installed it for the points in competition.
Thankfully the draw of car stereo theft kinda shrunk with the downfall of the popularity of the hobby. Not saying there aren't still areas where your instal isn't safe, it just isn't the nationwide "every neighborhood" problem it was in the late 80s early 90's when the hobby was at its peak. Also makes me thankful for the proper sound deadening measures we use today......I can rock hard with the windows closed, and from the outside it sounds like a cranked factory setup.....lol. As far as protection, my factory alarm and an insurance rider hopefully have my back........
Another thing that always bothered me about alarms are the fact that they never stopped anything from being stolen......as a matter of a fact back when stereo thievery was a serious pursuit, alarms actually drew attention to cars worthy of being broken in to......kinda like branded decals, tint, and aftermarket wheels.
if you "hobby" the chances are you're exposed and not safe, but it's the question of how big, how much, how accessible and all that.
factory alarms are useful, since I don't believe the crooks target the systems anymore, they are more likely to try to take home the whole enchilada.
I don't know if I'm just lucky or what but keeping the factory stereo and using bluetooth off a phone source, takes everything out except the trunk contents, and hidden drivers.
no more CD cases, music is basically free and even then, if it's in a stream, or stuck on a cloud or in a drive, all you're left with in a smash and grab is some a-pillar tweets and a rough time in the boot, it's the industry changes that make smash and grabs a low value/high risk venture now.
I haven't heard of anyone losing equipment in the last 5 years, I guess.
then again, youth today are putting off driving, owning cars, and needing the equipment that goes in, smart phone takes care of it all, you can call your uber service, pay a reasonable fee, listen to your phone on ear buds, good enough with pirated mp3's.
we come from a more materialistic generation, the kids today don't seem to mind or care all that much about competing for anything, and after a system goes past a 2 way front and sub, you're in a margin.
I think the best security is how and where you park... Unfortunately, people hardly turn their heads anymore when they hear a car alarm go off.
