Weshole's Higlander build
Well, I finally got around to getting my system installed in my (new to me) 02 Highlander. This is my only ride now as I sold my IS300 and gave my Blazer to my youngest kid. So, here she is just about to go under the blade.

Yummy Zapco goodness!!! And some Double D's :)

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
These are the woofers I am using in the front with the Zapco tweeters and x-overs. Silver flutes. Have had them for years and finally get a chance to use them. They sound great!! I have only one Zapco/ESB mid as the other one was fried and by then, Zapco stopped importing them. I do have a buddy in Rome that lives close to ESB's location. I haven't pursued trying to get a replacement as I think it may be cost prohibitive to do so.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Hey, let me know if you do! Would love to get a matching red cone subwoofer for the Zapco/ESB set I have!!!
Always read great things about those Silver Flute - very stout looking woofers for sure.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Gonna switch things up a bit. Zapco amp is just not cutting it on the low end. It's nice and all. But, Im hankerin for just a bit more. Not enough room for a Z2k like I had before. So, I got this instead.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Well, a lot has changed since my last update on this thing. First off, I got rid of the M2C that replaced my first Zapco amp. Turns out I did find room for A Z2KD amp. Although, I didnt document the placement. It is close to where the other amp was. Its too fukn cold out to move the box and take pics. So, you will have to use your imagination. LOL. Also, the OZ Audio 4ch amp I was running took a shit on me. After seeing the solder side of the board, Its a wonder it worked as long as it did. (No pics of that either). So, there is a Massive Audio NX4 running the same speakers as before temporarily. I sold the two 8's and replaced them with (2) Toro X 12's in a big ass box and ran them that way for about a year and just couldnt leave shit alone. I wanted to downsize box again but didnt want to lose what the 12's put out. So, I built this.

The box was designed using a buddies computer and cut using his CNC router. My first time assembling a box I didn't cut the panels for myself. I did attach and router the front baffle and rabbeted the sub openings for a flush mount. It was nice to not have to do much touch up with the sander after assembly. I just had to fill the holes from the nailer and the countersunk screws along with the transition to the front baffle. Coated it and painted it. And... VOILA!!! It is installed. The subs are Dayton Audio Ultimax 8's/ They sound good and smooth and have decent output. Although not as much as the 12's. But, they arent broke in yet. I hope it gains just a little output from where they are now. but overall, Im happy.
Future plans are to get another Zapco Z150.4 and Im replacing the Zapco/Silver flute combo in the front and the Polk Audio coax's in the rear with Massive Audio components and coaxials.
Ill try to take pics as I do more.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
That turned out great!
...and plus points for the proper use of the word "voila"

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Update time again. After pouring over the cost of the Zapco Z150.4, I decided to be a little bit more on the price conscious side (being a cheap ass). So, I hunted for a decent quality A/B amp and, well, I figured Why not try this. A Skar Audio RP150.4 AB. The internals look legit. Also, Here are the Massive speakers I will be running.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
I also found out that the bass response (vehicle wise) isnt great. Meaning no matter what I use for sub stage, I just dont get the output I want no matter what I use for substage. Oh well.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Man, blast from the past right there. Those Massive Audio components were actually quite surprising on how detailed they sounded. To me, at least. Very curious how you like that amplifier. Had a QC15 paired with two sets of those comps, and man they jammed.
Do you think some Summo 8's might get a bit louder?

So far, Ive had 2 Hippo 8's (which are a step up from the sumo's), two DD 8's, and Two 12" Toro X's. all powered by my Zapco 2k which has plenty of power. Its definitely the vehicle.
You're right about the massive comps. They jam. I have used this very pair of Massive Comps and loved them so much I kept them. They are very pleasing to my ears. A little bright on thg high end but, I can tune that down.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Wes,
A JL 13TW5-3 will give you a thin very wide box! (.85-.95 cu. ft)Just a thought , concentric circles allow for a shallow configuration, box can be aimed up or towards rear lift gate (think best sound or output)
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Down-firing would be an option, some pointed cones would work well. Two of the 10TW3D4 (.6 cu. ft. ) would allow for better output and lower ohmage wiring!
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Dayton Audio DSS4 ,parts express will make the air in vehicle the primary means of subwoofer sound -vs- the vibrations transmitted via box interactiom with floor. Think "Clear/clean" notes!
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Wes, if you prefer depth in your box over heighth , the JL W7's ( 8 ) have major output !

Changing subs will not change the issue. All of these aforementioned combinations are currently in other vehicles with less power and perform as intended. It is DEFINITELY vehicle related. I will experiment with enclosure placement and see if that helps. Im pretty sure I already know the answer. Lol. Its too bad I like this vehicle as much as I do or it would be replaced already.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Does reversing the wires to sub affect the perceived sound amount? Corner loading @ 65 Hz and down might better be attempted in a space that is "larger" , jumbo jet would work well. How much TA / time delay do you use?(subwoofer)
Is everything you are using pushing the apparent sound out onto the front hood of your vehicle?{ Phase/TA/equalizing }

The spikes almost completely erase the box vehicle interaction and allow the pycho-acoustics to work at making the 63 Hz and lower notes appear to be coming from the hood over your motor in the front !

How are you going to fix it ? Maybe sell & get another vehicle like one you have heard with excellent bass reproduction.
Besides being less than "optimum" on output ... Have you achieved a projection of the sound out to front hood of vehicle ? . . . or , is it just from the rear [ behind ] you ?

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Found the problem. I was brainstorming and figured Id check final resistance at the terminal cup. 2ohms..... Its suppose to be 1.3ohms or close to it. so then I hit the terminal with 12v to see where the issue lies. Found one sub barely moving. Removed it to find one dead VC meaning that particular sub was acting like a passive radiator. That explains everything. For shits and giggles, I hooked up the one good coil and installed the box. SHIT CAME ALIVE!!!! Ordering a new sub and all else would be history.
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Well dang man, sorry about the sub, but at least you figured it out!

Im glad too. Its not a biggie on the sub. Ill order another and worry about this one after. Im just glad I figured it out. I was really thinking the vehicle was the culprit. I have never found a vehicle I couldnt get big bass out of if thats what I was after. The box modeled great with the subs and there is PLENTY-O-POWER on tap with that Zapco. These things do impress.

Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Nicely done weshole !
Let us know when you drop in different sub [ 1.3 ohms equals BIG hittin low notes ]
:woohoo:
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
Actually, with the one vc hooked up on the said sub, Im at 1ohm (DVC 2ohm). But, I wont lose anything noticable when getting a sub with both voice coils good.
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
:nono: with only one voice coil working you lose half your output and try modeling another box . . . see what it says ?
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
With the output it has now, Im excited to get a sub with both working coils.
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
I should clarify. I will be replacing the one sub with a bad coil with another one to match the other 2.
-
Re: Weshole's Higlander build
My bad :( did not know you were using 3 subs.
U got some serious `Low End`
