Square waves are associated with clipping and too much power under the curve - voice coil changes from copper color to a darker color before failure of speaker ( also, aroma of voice coil is sensed via olfactory or sense of smell )!

Might help some , as far as replacement of speakers after they get burned up $$ U need to turn it down !
Harshness is heard by many , sometimes it is laid on speakers . If your amplifier's gain is turned to right or up , excessively , the noise floor is raised to unacceptable levels [ solution - buy an amp with more power ].
Learn the sequence to follow when setting gains , correctly.

When clipping causes power compression [ speakers sound 3 dB's quieter ] . Some just turn volume knob to the right , not good !
If you listen for extended periods of time and your speakers seem to drop in output level [ Time to quit ! " for that session ].

How high can you hear a difference , and is this helpful ?
Do you understand the difference between a sine wave ( gently undulating or rolling waves ) and ( square waves where the top of the wave has been clipped off and you are left with too much under the curve ).
Time to buy new speakers

At subwoofer frequencies - 10% distortion is exceptable to a large number of people . [ 20's - 80's hertz ] At midrange frequencies distortion is easier identified and found objectionable. [ 100 hZ - 2 khZ ]
Hopefully , you can distinguish between square or " clipped off waves " and the sine waves.
At a high enough frequency the waves sound similar. some or few people can hear above 20 khZ
Dog whistles start around 23 khZ !

Some tweeters claim to play frequencies well above 20,000 hertz. Since I can't hear those frequencies and I have seen tweeters that claimed 50,000 hertz [ super tweeters ] , never was interested in em .
