Barry Smith - 1989 Bentley Turbo R - 1989 CSR
Re: Nakamichi - 1989 Bentley Turbo R - 1989 CSR
I remember helping on an install in a Turbo R back in the mid 2000s when I worked at a shop. Installed a Nak CD700ii with MB Quart Q comps and QM amps. It was a take over job from a shop that promised way too much and delivered way too little.

Still, IMHO, one of the most handsome sedans ever made.
Gotta love that Motorola 6800XL analog cellphone .... top-end for the day of course, hands-free voice-command dialing!
Thanks for posting.

I love the cost breakdown in the article lists labor as "Extras" at $16,000

Isn't labor shown as "Installation (200 hours)" line item? $25,000
The "Extras" of $16,000 must be for the custom Grey Poupon dispenser.

With the kind of money that customer had to have that car and that gear, 16K is pocket change.

Oh shit I missed that, I was in awe of $16,000 in extras....
Re: Nakamichi - 1989 Bentley Turbo R - 1989 CSR
a nice car, but I have to call shenanigans on the SQ judge, a coax complement front and rear, shouldn't be "top 5" unless it was agreed upon beforehand, allowing a few minutes of down road upper crustiness.
then again, if it's 1989 and Nak's fine preamp control structure, analog through the crossovers and little zoot in the way of voltage, this might be as good as it got...
well, not really. I was running 3-way active back in '86, Alpine's first computer controlled EQ was out a couple of years, who knows? Probably some rudimentary time-alignment box by Alpine ready to hook into the 8-pin DIN's...

Based on the pictures it looks like the owner wanted it to look stock so coaxials would probabbly he the best using stock locations in the doors and nak made some damn fine cooaxials. The SP's I had in the Eldo where real nice. Esspecialy since they designed them to be able to run active as well as passive.

Sometimes I miss the simplicity of these old systems, sort of expecting to see the best the industry offered in a featured car but this install probably never did get judged in the SQ points sort of way.
Sometimes it's more about seeing the 200 hours of work keeping it stock looking, than it is about showing off 19 drivers and a Logic7-derived layout.
And should I get a chance to own a Bentley Turbo R one day, I'll be sure to remember...
