Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
OK. I've been working on this car for about 2.5 years (not real diligently) and finally got sound a few days after attending Finals in Tennessee. I was hoping to have sound for Finals and maybe take advantage of some experienced ears, but software issues kept that from happening.
Many people have probably seen this over on the "DIY" site, so I'll condense things to get to the point I'm at now.
4/12: Purchased car

2012 Kia Rio5 EX Auto with UVO. Factory HU does AM/FM/SiriusXM/CD/Aux/USB/iPod/Zune (!)/backup camera and voice commands. Not changing it for a while.

Tinted all the windows. 30% all around except 40% on the windshield. Yes, it was illegal. lol
5/12: Wheels, Tires, Vinyl
First set of wheels. Drag DR23's, 16x7 with 205/55/16 Nitto NeoGens.

Wrapped the mirror caps, roof, rear spoiler, chrome trim on the grill and foglights in gloss black vinyl.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...-201014291.jpg
At this point, this is the equipment I had:
Audison Bit One.1 that I won from a Mr. Marv raffle on DIYMA, the Vifa Ring radiator tweets I had been sitting on for about 3 years, the Tang Band 3" Bamboos I used in my Genesis Coupe, my 7" Dayton RS180's as well as my Dayton RSS265HO (also from the GC).
I decided to run some old school Sony Mobile ES amps, and picked up (2) XM-2100G's and an XM-5046. I went with the 5046 because XM-450G's don't come around often. I looked on and off for about 2 years before one finally fell into my lap.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...o/78ccb1af.jpg
Next, I built some pods for my 3's and tweets to use the the area by the small front windows. I aimed them with a laser pointer at the opposing corners above the A pillar at the headliner, intending to reduce reflections from the glass.

http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...9-30184116.jpg
Sometime around early '13, I started playing with an Arduino microprocessor kit. The intent was to have it intercept the steering wheel control commands, filter out volume up, volume down and mode, pass the remaining commands on to the radio, and use another portion of the Arduino to simulate the rotary encoder of the Bit One. That way I can set the volume on the radio and forget it, and use the steering wheel controls as master volume. I can also write software that would allow me to add secondary functions to certain buttons if I so desire. I got the filtering part done, and wrote version 1 of the software for the volume control, but haven't tested it yet.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Then I switched out the display on the Bit One DRC for a red on black one to match my cluster illumination.
Before:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pskzx7lehg.jpg
After:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszr2ov9ii.jpg
I built some kicks, and vented them into the frame rail. This required relocating my hood release:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psxm8smres.jpg
This was pre-vinyl. The other one looks the same. I had some old MB Quard flush mount grilles to use, but hadn't put them on at this point. I can't seem to find any of the build pics of the kicks, but if I do, I'll include them later.
Then I built my box. (about 5 tries to get it how I wanted)
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psntwgbnxc.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps2lgdxrqk.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps7e78rehj.jpg
I eventually got around to pre running all the wiring in the car. All of my power and speaker wire is KnuKonceptz 100% OFC. 12ga speaker wire all over, 1/0 power and ground and 4ga after the distro block direct to the amps. Street Wires CBR-44M distro. All of the wiring is techflexed, color coded, and labeled. The front speaker wires are terminated in kicks with Traxxass TRX connectors, so if I decided to move things later, I wouldn't have to run new wires all the way from the amps.
Random pics:
1/0 run through a factory grommet to a Tsunami Compression terminal fuse holder mounted on a custom 18ga steel mount.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psiqxuapue.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psacxzna30.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psvoydvctn.jpg
Made a custom mount for the distro in the back. Power connections in to distro are made with StreetWires compression fit 1/0 rings.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psilz7fjv0.jpg
For signal, I ran a speaker level signal back off the front speaker outputs from the HU, AND an Toslink cable. I plan to add Optical out to the factory HU, so I pre ran it. If it doesn't work out, I may switch to a tablet later, and will use it then. The speaker level signals are braided, techflexed and heat shrunk.
(continued...)

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psumfhbwai.jpg
Signal is run up/down the center, power on the left. The speaker outputs from the amps are run up the center and over to above the kick panel area.
Then I build my 2 tiered amp rack in the spare tire well. All in all, with the sub on the passenger side and the amps in the well, I only lost about 3-4" width and about 1.25" in height. Still fully usable.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psbffxoctt.jpg
The bottom layer is bolted in to a brace for the floor of the spare tire well with rivnuts. The top layer is held to that with thumb bolts for easy access and serviceability.
Then, essentially I putzed around and left it that way. A couple months ago, I decided to try some new techniques I learned and make something cool looking.
I built a panel on the left side to retain the factory pocket. Then I built the floor panel. I used the front of the car's grill as inspiration for the floor. The indented sections on the side panels mimic the center console. The painted trim rings are to match some of the trim in the front of the car.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps3n9kpzcb.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pstbyxp0rp.jpg
And that's about where I am now, build wise.
Don't mind the JL grille. It was easier to buy it for $7 than to make one. There's an Illusion C10XL back there, in about .55 ft3. Way too small, but still sounds pretty good. May try out the Dayton just to see how it does, even if I have to make a spacer. It spec'd out much better in that box.
Now, the next part of my master plan, is to put the DRC display inside the rear view mirror. I picked up several mirrors from a local junkyard, and shave the lights and switches off of the one I decided to use.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psum8p0cck.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszx73o6wi.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psps3uqkui.jpg
I picked up some 2 way mirrored plexi and used my router to make a copy of the original glass piece.
Should be getting a little more serious about this in the very near future.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I'm hoping to make it down to NC at some point. Wondering where next year's Finals will be.
I had such a great time, I want to go again.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Good stuff here! I especially like the DRC in the mirror idea. Where did you find the new display, and do they come in white on black?
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Very nice work indeed. Liking all the integration you have going on. That's good stuff for sure!

I got it from Sparkfun. They are available in white on black, red on black and green on black. They are a little bigger than the factory display, and the pin outs are different.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Damn that's some serious modding you got going on, very cool idea for the bit one display in the mirror. And that arduino controller is a badass idea man, makes me wish I could actually code properly. Definitely looking forward to more of this.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
^^^ I know, right?
Makes me want to integrate the Zapco DRC somewhere else now, and go back to a double din head unit.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I went with a double din HU just to be able to incorporate a rear camera for my wife :D

I used to program in BASIC and Assembly and was starting to learn OS9 (similar to OS2 for the platform I was using) when I was a kid. When my dad bought a PC, I quit because you could just download or buy anything you needed or wanted. Most of the programming was simple if...then...else type stuff for the arduino, so it wasn't rocket science to do.

I'm thinking of moving to a tablet, but I don't want to give up my BU camera. I have some ideas on that front, too.

Your rear view mirror mod is a great idea I've seen that on a few new cars and it's awesome. Have you been stopped yet for the windshield tint...

What a nice build. The technical and aesthetic integration is impressive. I might even have to go over to the other place to get more details.
Did you do any listening or measurements before determining your final pod speaker orientations?
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Not really. I used some of these speakers in my previous car. I based it a little on previous experience, a little on reviews, and the rest on aesthetics. I didn't want it to stick out too far. I aimed them at the headliner with a laser pointer. I'm pretty happy with the results so far, and I haven't played with the time alignment yet. I haven't wrapped the pillars yet, because if I need to make changes I can.
Nope, I didn't get hassled for the windshield, but I did have to strip the front 2 windows.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Jay, thanks for coming to World Finals! I really like your work. I look forward to seeing your progress and hearing your car someday!
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Thanks! Emjoyed meeting you and the rest of the WCA/NCSQ people.
Well, it's playing now. I need to spend some time on a serious tuning session, but it's working.
I was using switched power from the car to turn on the BitOne, but I ended up with a really bad turn off snap...so I switched to signal sensing, now I have a slight turn on and off thump. Need to work on that but that can come later.
I had a great time at Finals and getting to meet everyone. I hope to go again next year. Maybe I can even be there as a competitor...lol

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Wow. It's been a little while. Not much of an update, but I picked up a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 and a bunch of ancillary items to go with it. I don't have much use for the tablet outside the car, so I kind of bought it on a whim. The main reasons I picked this one were:
Size: The screen is slightly larger than an iPad mini, but the X:Y dimensions actually fit in my dash, where the iPad wouldn't have.
Screen: Better resolution than the iPad Mini Retina
Price: $250. Didn't care about 4G since I can hotspot off my phone if I need internet access.
Storage: Accepts up to a 64G MicroSD card.
USB OTG connectivity: Cheaper to interface and do what I want to with it.
FLAC playback.
My ancillary items:
Anker 4.8A charger (two ports, either 2.4A ea, or 3A on one and is supposed to adjust charging based on demand)
USB Buddy 3A DC-DC convertor. I bought this in case the charger doesn't work, and figured I could use it to power my Arduino if the Anker one works.
OTG USB Y-cable
Amazon Basics 4 port USB Hub
Behringer UCA222
MicroUSB extension
So, basically the Y cable plugs in to the tablet, one side plugs in to the hub, the other plugs in to the charger.
Then I can plug the Behringer piece into the hub. The UCA gives me Optical output (and RCA out, if I choose to use it) as well as a volume-adjustable headphone output. Since I already ran the Optical cable to the BitOne, that is my plan.
My initial plan was to build a fiberglass pan similar to one of Soundman's side slider kits for the iPad mini. So, I made a couple molds, but didn't like how they were coming out.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psihgcc6kd.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psxiulfhy5.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psg7asnwan.jpg
So, I decided to switch it up and do it on the router. Problem is my router table was a piece of wood with some dry erase board over it that I made and put over a flimsy old garbage can.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psp9obryko.jpg
I finally decided to make the jump to a real router table (with a lift and everything! lol) so *poof!* there went nearly $1000.
Not sure if he's a member here but I got everything from Joey Cloninger (g0a on DIYMA). Amazing customer service if you're looking for 12v related tools. Especially router-related tools.
I had it all planned out, and routered out my templates (male and female) and then just need to shrink one end of the "kit" face to keep the tablet from falling out.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps8xhhnuya.jpg
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszfmdskdv.jpg
Then Soundman came out with this:
http://www.soundmanca.com/products/g...eap-slider-kit
Wouldn't work with mine, but it's like he read my mind. One of the installers that covers my day off linked it to me because he was like "That's exactly what Jay's doing!" LOL
Mine will work the same way. But I want to put a little flare to it, so I'm going to pic up more bits from Joey and try to use a vertical 3d routering technique to match the contour of my dash bezel and bevel the edge going in toward the tablet.
Now I just need to make room in the garage to USE my new router table, and I can move on.
I haven't decided yet, but I may also use one of the Sony App Remote HU's, because it will allow me to retain AM/FM/XM as well as BT handsfree calling, CD playback and steering wheel controls (everything except volume, which will be go through my Arduino piece to adjust volume from the steering wheel controls directly on the BitOne. Mostly worked that out but really just need to sit down and finish programming it.
And since I need it mostly done (in one form or another) before the end of April, I'm in search of motivation. lol
After installing Remote Starters all day in a wet, cold garage, it's touch to work on my own stuff when I get home.

Get that shit right jay! I'll be looking forward to hearing it at the meet!

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Even if I manage to make no physical changes to it before then. It WILL have sound this time. lol
I'm also trying to track down some random CD's or FLAC files to put together a demo disc/playlist on the tablet.
Yes, I learned my lesson and plan to bring my own listening material, as well as some blank CD-R's and my laptop(s).

I'm also trying to source some solid Flac or CDs to make my own demo cd. What is a good software to use to cut the tracks like most do to fit more demo size tracks?

Good question. I'm a Mac user, so it's kinda a pain to find anything that lets me rip FLAC files on here. But I have a Windows Netbook, so I was hoping it might be something I could do in Windows Media Player. If not, I'll look into it once I narrow down the tracks I want to include.
Right now, I know there'll be some Metallica, Michael Jackson, Great White, Janet Jackson and probably some Brother Dege (heard it in Strakele's car a while ago and remembered liking it alot), and I have pics of a few HU screens from finals with tracks I like.

I looked at XLD, but for some reason didn't pull the trigger on the download. I can't remember why.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Erin or Jay, does DB allow you to cut the tracks down to create a Demo disk?
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I've never used it, but I know iTunes can. So, I may just do everything in iTunes (as ALAC's) and then convert them to FLAC with XLD after I'm done.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
Not sure about FLAC but an easy cut/edit/modify songs software is Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I have that. I used it to make test tones for setting up gains and such. Didn't think to use it for that.
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
If you cut a FLAC file or wav. file using Audacity, are files still considered FLAC or wav.?
-
Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I think it saves every edit to WAV file. Even if you start as mp3. Can't remember for sure.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
I found an app for my tablet called Rocket Player, and it will play ALAC's as well as FLAC's, so I can encode the stuff I want in iTunes and use an app from the same company to sync my iTunes library to my tablet. It also has a 10 band EQ built in that can be applied to individual songs, genres, etc. (Or so I understand it, anyway).
Also been working on my rear-view mirrow/BitOne display project. Ended up using the mirrored plexi I bought. I think it will work well, but I lost my day/night functionality. I may hit up the junk yard and look for some more mirrors and try it later again with the actual glass.

Re: Jay's 2012 Kia Rio5 Build log
OK. Remote Start season is winding down, the weather is warming up and I got some motivation!
Decided to move some stuff around, so the only thing going IN the mirror is the LCD Display for the BitOne. The main part of the DRC will go down by the HU. This gave me a little better access to it.
I used a Cat6 cable I had laying around, cut it in half, and covered part of it in black techflex.

A while back I bought some mirrored plexi for this project, but decided to try it with the original glass mirror, and it didn't work as well as I had hoped, so I went back to the plexi. Works pretty good, but because the original glass was cut in a wedge shape, and the plexi isn't, I lost my day/night mirror functionality. :mean:

I used some foam inside the mirror to make sure there was no rattling.

I used some female .1" headers to make a couple of 8 pin plugs for the display making it an easy swap if it dies. (But didn't really get pics.)
I also made a small circuit board with a couple of RJ45 jacks on it for the cat6 to plug in to. (No pics at the moment) and then soldered some wires I had already attached to the DRC board to the RJ45 Jacks.
I've been experimenting on this particular DRC for quite some time, and I don't know if it could handle much more. I already burned a trace or two, and had to track down where they went. I may swap it for a newer one at some point, but for now, I'm OK with it.
Anyway, here's an example of how well the plexi works as a mirror:

Oh, I also put some tape on the back of the plexi to block out any light from behind so it wouldn't show through and become a distraction.

With it all snapped back together, I used 3 AAA batteries to fire up the backlighting just for testing. Here's some pics of the mirror/display in action.

I plan to add a contrast adjustment and illumination circuit to the board with the RJ45 jacks on it so it's relatively easy to get to to make changes.
Anyway, that's it for now.
Jay
