DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
I have some SB Acoustics drivers, that I have been hoarding and decided to build myself some sweet sounding bookshelf speakers.
Since this is my first time building my first X-overs, I decided to use a proven design that is available from Meniscus in a kit form. I e-mailed Mark and asked if I could just buy the x-over parts, separately, since I already had the drivers that were included in the speaker kit.

Sweet!. What are your cab ideas?
-
Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
I will be using the parameters around which the x-over was designed.
The cab is going to have an internal volume of 15.5 liters, ported. (2"id x 8" long)

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
How much do you think it would cost for somebody to duplicate this project?

Nice, but was more interested in materials. Assumed you would model them.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
The final enclosure design, is still in the air.
I may try to fab something with curves, rather than a traditional box.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
$80 for the x-over parts, the woofers are $65 each, tweeters are $55 each . Or you could by it in kit form from Meniscus for $357(enclosure not included) http://meniscusaudio.com/mandolin-pair-p-1244.html

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
Nice, about to start on my 1st HA project, little more adventurous*: 3-way floor standers using mid and a ribbon/tweeter, TQWT enclosure and then a sub woofer T-TQWT. I decided to go active with my set up, largely because I cannot get crossover parts as easily in the UK, my soldering skills suck and I can cheat a lot with miniDSP (when funds allow, a little more basic active crossover for the moment). Scored a Sonance Sonamp 12ch on ebay for £150-retails at £1500 over here-30wpc@8ohm or 45@4ohm or bridgeable pairs.
So, I look forward to seeing your build progress and hope I can pick up some tips along the way!

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
Sorry I haven't had time to work on this project...my StreetFighter bike project is tying up my spare time.
Not in the mood for F-Ging or breathing MDF so I just ordered a pair of enclosures from P-E. I will update as soon as they arrive.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
I just received the DAYTON cabinets from P-E and since I will be using the "small format" version of the SB tweeter, I will have to fab 2 rings to adapt them to the cabinet's pre-machined opening.
The SB woofer has a slightly wider flange than the cabinet's factory relief..so I will need to rabbet out the flange area, also.

Also, Dayton used 1-5/8" x 6" ports. I was able to pull them out and replace them with central vacuum pvc tubing which has 1-7/8 id x 8" to reduce port noise and get the tune I need.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
And we're back...
This was my first attempt to fab adapter rings that incorporated a 3mm thick lip. Well H-Depot MDF sux salty balls....
The shit de-laminates wa-a-a-ay too easily, so I used some 1/8" hardboard and a 3/8" thick poplar strip that I had on hand and made a 2 piece adapter that I glued in place with Weldbond PVA.

I also found some 2" (id) cardboard mailing tube at Staples and used that to modify the port dimensions.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
Tomorrow I will make a template to use as a guide to enlarge the opening to accommodate the slightly larger SB woofer.

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
I was able to enlarge/deepen the enclosure to accommodate the wider/thicker flange of the SB woofer by using a 32mm rabbet bit with the bearing completely removed.
I tested it on a scrap piece of "top quality"(sarcasm) MDF and was able to produce a consistent step...as long as i went around w/out stopping.

UPDATE
I broke the speakers in on a mini stereo(my Yamaha amp is in need of minor repairs) and found that I did not like the sound that much.
Suspecting the cheapo stereo was to blame, I temporarily rigged a S-S REF 4.760 (bridged) + my Eclipse 7200MKii ... holy crap, what a difference! They literally came alive.

I still need to play with the amount of stuffing to get rid of tid-bit of "boominess"...but, overall, I am impressed with the sound. :D

Re: DIY Bookshelf 2-way speakers
After running them for a few weeks, I have gotten to like them very much.
Even more so now that they're hooked up to my newly acquired ol' school Sima (SIM AUDIO) W-3050 amplifier.
At normal to moderately loud levels they can impersonate a larger pair of speakers, but there is so much you can accomplish with a 6.5 inch woofer.
They SB woofers start to sound funky, when asked to play low n loud and bottom out, not long after that.
Another thing i noticed was I prefer having the enclosures sealed, rather than ported. I lose a bit of low end, but not much....but above 90hz SQ is noticeably improved.
Ideally I will need to build or purchase an amplified sub to assist with low-end frequencies. (later this fall or winter)
This smells of processing and multiple amplification..mini dsp, to the rescue?
