Bob's Model Train Layout Build
Not vehicle or audio related at all, but there is a bit of electrical work, skill, and level of creativity and craftsmanship that goes in to this kind of hobby. Thought people might like to see some pictures along the way.
Since my garage is hovering around 10 degrees and I cant get any of my major projects done out there, I decided to work on my model train layout. here are the details...
- N scale (1:160 scale)
- Denver Rio Grande centric
- small 24" x 84" layout.
- basic squeezed oval
- Entire back half is in a tunnel
- top of the tunnel will serve as a display for my California Zephyr passenger set
- Lots of home brewed goodness
First project was to tackle the tunnel portals...
bag of wooden sticks from walmart

I used a walnut stain on the sticks and immediately wiped it off for an uneven weathered look. Did a bunch of cutting to fit and gluing and came up with this...

Its not done yet but this is as far as I got. More pictures to come as the progress continues.

Re: Bob's Model Train Layout Build
every tunnel portal entrance needs an exit. Here is the other end. Not done yet, but the majority of it is there.

worked on a drawer today that will house all the buttons to activate the switch machines. Its similar to a drawer with a cuttingboard built in to it. Slide the drawer out and slide back the cover to reveal all the buttons. Will be kinda slick when its all done

Ive got the day off and have a lot of wiring to do. Goal is to get trains running by the end of the day. Here is the final track layout. All track is soldered together (unless properly isolated)

waiting on some 20ga 2-con to arrive to wire up the buttons. Decided to use my weekend building a cement plant. Still have to weather it, but the basics are there.

Re: Bob's Model Train Layout Build
Gawd I love miniatures/dioramas. I have an 'n' scale and some track sitting in a box in my closet waiting for me to get the inspiration to build a layout. Years and Years ago my [ex] father-in-law built a 4' x 4' glass top table for my ex. Each 12x12 section was a different season. Wish I had taken that with me when I left the dumbass.
You have some amazing skills sir. It's nice to see the craftsmanship and realism.

this is the layout I use at work above my desk. It is supported by shelf brackets from my cubicle walls. This picture is of it on my garage floor. Cant take a picture of it in action at work because cameras aren't allowed in a classified environment

Re: Bob's Model Train Layout Build
so I realized this layout had been in the garage for a few months and I just dont have the time to work on it. So I trashed it. /thread.

Re: Bob's Model Train Layout Build
back from the dead (the thread that is). So I was getting bored in Korea and decided to make so T-track layouts. Ill only post the one for now. For those that dont know, T-track is a tabletop layout involving a bunch of people. Everyone makes their own little layout to certain specifications and links them all together to run trains. Im just making a couple layouts to have something to do. Plus they are small and easy to work on.
Here is where Im at so far. Still need to add some color, trees, cows, and fencing.
